Juno Temple on Far From the Madding Crowd, Johnny Depp's Black Mass transformation, and rock 'n' roll

1 May 2015 4:57 PM, PDT | Cineplex | See recent Cineplex news »

Listing the Coen Brothers, Spike Jonze, and Paul Thomas Anderson as her Bucket List of directors with whom to work, Juno Temple’s film choices are best described as eclectic. The daughter of rock and roll filmmaker Julien Temple, Juno had a creative, rebellious spirit instilled in her at an early age, and her career has reflected that greatly.

Starring opposite Matthew McConaughey in Killer Joe and Daniel Radcliffe in Horns, she’s never been one to back away from darker roles. On the other hand, she’s also completely willing to play dress-up every once and a while. You may remember her as a fairy in Maleficent or as Queen Anne, dripping in pearls and lace, in Paul W. S. Anderson’s The Three Musketeers.

Juno’s next film is Far From the Madding Crowd, which was directed by Thomas Vinterberg (The Hunt) and also stars Matthias Schoenaerts (Rust and Bone »

Do you feel the power of the Gladiators? 10 stars of the hit '90s show then and now

30 April 2015 9:00 AM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - TV news news »

"Do you feel the power of the Gladiators? Can you face the challenge of the champions? Do you have the courage of the heroes?

"Do you have the will or the skill? Do you have the strength, the speed the heart to be a winner? Deep down in your Soul?"

These were the fundamental questions posed by ITV's original Gladiators, to both the audience and brave contenders who dared to take part. While this particular writer longed to be Lightning (her backflips were to die for), all the seemingly superhuman powerhouses were forces to reckon with - only occasionally tamed by strict referee John Anderson.

Originally hosted by John Fashanu and Ulrika Jonsson, Gladiators was what Saturday nights in the '90s were made of.

So as Saracen (aka Mike Lewis) returns to our small screens to tackle the Ninja Warrior UK obstacle course, we pick out some of the »

Helen Hunt Should Maybe Learn to Delegate

28 April 2015 9:00 PM, PDT | Village Voice | See recent Village Voice news »

There's a bit too much going on in Helen Hunt's Ride, perhaps because Hunt is doing a bit too much in it: In addition to directing, Hunt also wrote and stars, and unless you're Orson Welles — even sometimes when you are Orson Welles — it's a good idea to have someone around to tell you which lines don't work or which scenes don't quite fit. But there's a wry sweetness to this picture, about an overbearing New York editor and single mom, Hunt's Jackie, who follows her college-age son (Brenton Thwaites, Prince Phillip from Maleficent) to Los Angeles, where he aspires to become a surf bum and writer, probably in just about that order. As you can guess, Jackie has to learn what to hang onto and when to let go, and there's lots of let »

Film Review: ‘Ride’

27 April 2015 9:00 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The image of Helen Hunt determinedly trying to climb onto a surfboard — looking clumsy, tired and frustrated, yet refusing to accept defeat — is irresistible enough to offset some of the more wobbly missteps in “Ride,” an alternately endearing and exasperating dramedy that represents the actress’s first directorial outing in the eight years since “Then She Found Me.” Warm and engaging when it focuses on Hunt as an uptight New Yorker learning to mellow out on the beaches of Los Angeles, the film turns gratingly forced whenever her naive, angsty son steps into the frame, occasioning so much shrill, self-involved mother-son bickering you long for a tidal wave to come along and sweep them both out to sea. Fortunately, calmer waters ultimately prevail, and with its calculated, crowd-pleasing elements, this labor-of-love effort should earn some fans as it makes its way through the distribution pipelines.

Descendants Trailer: The New Generation of Disney Villains Is Pretty Sassy

27 April 2015 8:41 AM, PDT | BuzzSugar | See recent BuzzSugar news »

Ever wonder what it would be like if Disney's greatest villains had children of their own? That's the hook of the Disney Channel's new original movie, Descendants. The teenage children of Jafar, the Evil Queen from Snow White, Maleficent, and Cruella de Vil are given the opportunity to go off the island on which they've been exiled their entire lives and go to school with regular kids. (By "regular," I mean still from fairy tales, just not evil.) The trailer is cute and might make you consider getting back into the Disney Channel, especially since Kristin Chenoweth is playing Maleficent - and giving Angelina Jolie a run for her money. The movie will debut this Summer! »

Angelina Jolie Is Stunning as She Speaks Out For Syria

24 April 2015 11:25 AM, PDT | Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news »

Angelina Jolie made a special trip to NYC to attend a United Nations Security Council meeting on the Middle East and Syria on Friday. As the Special Envoy of the High Commissioner For Refugees, Angelina highlighted the refugee crisis in Syria, explaining that "we are failing to save lives in Syria." She got back to her Un duties after addressing another serious issue in late March, when she revealed she had surgery to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes and will not be able to have any more children. Angelina didn't let the news slow her down; just days after the op-ed was published in The New York Times, she attended the Kids' Choice Awards with her daughters Shiloh and Zahara. Angie won the award for favorite movie villain for Maleficent and gave an inspiring acceptance speech about celebrating differences. »

Johnny Depp is Whitey Bulger in Black Mass' first trailer with Benedict Cumberbatch, Adam Scott

23 April 2015 4:05 PM, PDT | Cineplex | See recent Cineplex news »

In this September’s Black MassJohnny Depp returns to the life of crime as Whitey Bulger, a character light-years away from Mortdecai’s moustache-twirling eponymous art dealer, or the wacky world of his frequent collaborator Tim Burton.

Bulger is perhaps best known to film audiences as the real-life inspiration behind Jack Nicholson’s Boston mob kingpin in Martin Scorsese’s The Departed. If Jack’s Frank Costello is only the carbon copy of Bulger, then we should be in for a hell of a ride with Black Mass and the real deal.

“He could be charming. He could be ruthless. He was like a cobra—you never knew where he could strike,” says director Scott Cooper of Bulger, a regular on the FBI’s ten most wanted fugitives list.

Bulger isn’t the first notorious crime lord brought to the big screen by Depp. He portrayed the infamous drug trafficker George Jung in Blow, »

Rumors Intensify For Jolie As Captain Marvel Director – But Is She The Least Qualified?

20 April 2015 5:10 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

The speculation surrounding the currently empty director’s chair of Marvel’s planned Captain Marvel movie continues to focus on Angelina Jolie. According to Collider’s updated story from their sources at Marvel, the appointment of Patty Jenkins as director of Wonder Woman for Warner Bros. has essentially kicked that speculation up a gear, moving the rumor status from the studio being ‘in pursuit of Jolie’ to being ‘in hot pursuit of Jolie.’ It remains to be seen whether the actress-director is either interested in making a comic book adaptation, or has the time – but the rumors highlight an interesting, yet frustrating trend in the current superhero genre.

There is no denying that both DC/Warner Bros. and Marvel/Disney have heeded audience calls for better female representation in their superhero movie franchises. Less than ten years ago, every major superhero release was led by male characters, but now, we »

Patty Jenkins To Direct Wonder Woman

15 April 2015 4:33 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

In one of the fastest turnarounds in recent memory, Warner Bros. has found a new director for its standalone Wonder Woman movie. Mere days after Michelle MacLaren exited the project, Monster helmer Patty Jenkins has now been locked in to direct.

Warner Bros.’ decision to secure a new director implies its eagerness to push forward. Since Wonder Woman was first announced last year, the matter of who would usher the iconic warrior to the screen has remained at the forefront of industry chatter. MacLaren’s appointment was met with universal glee, as the experienced TV showrunner displayed zest and enthusiasm in her approach to the character. Her take apparently steered the beloved Amazonian away from her traditional comic backstory and into a new direction, and thus, the creative differences reason was cited in the majority of reports on her departure.

This news comes directly after a report signaling Angelina Jolie’s involvement hit the web. »

Angelina Jolie reflects on Unbroken: "I prefer directing to acting"

1 April 2015 4:33 AM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Angelina Jolie has revealed she "prefers directing to acting" as she reflected on making World War II drama Unbroken.

The actress and filmmaker also discussed the struggle of the biopic's protagonist Louis Zamperini with Elle magazine, saying that "our experiences, good and bad, make us who we are."

"I prefer directing to acting," said Jolie, when asked about the artistic need that is satisfied by directing movies.

"There is huge freedom that comes from being behind the camera. It brings a lot of responsibilities as well, but is intensely rewarding.

"Particularly the chance to help draw out the best in young actors, like Jack O'Connell in Unbroken, who is a remarkable talent."

The drama follows former Olympian turned war hero Zamperini (O'Connell) and his survival during a harrowing 47 days in a raft to being held captive in a prisoner-of-war camp.

Speaking about Zamperini's great struggle, Jolie said: "I do believe »
