Trivia

The film makes a few references to classic horror films. The scene when the cross falls from the wall above Samantha's bed is almost identical to a scene from A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). When Freddy Krueger almost breaks through the wall above Nancy's bed, knocking her crucifix off. Thomas even uses one of Nancy's lines, "Come out and show yourself." The scenes with the TV tuned to static and paranormal investigators are a probable nod to Poltergeist (1982). See more »

Goofs

When the glass breaks and Sam and the mother go to check, the cupboard is open and shows the cups. Later when Thomas goes to get a drink, the cup is set down and seems to sound as if it is plastic. See more »

Ironically, it has a bit more activity than Paranormal Activity.
25 January 2010 | by (Edinburgh.) – See all my reviews

Yes indeed, if you hadn't already guessed from the title that this was a riff (*cough*rip-off*cough) of Paranormal Activity then you should go straight to the back of the class. It's from Asylum so you should not be expecting greatness and it's clearly not going to win any points for originality.

To name the people involved here, such as the director and cast members, would be to give them a bit too much credit, I feel, so let's just say that one lad, his sister and their mother are being bothered at night by a pesky spook that the lad tries to investigate with a number of cameras set up throughout the home. So far, so Paranormal Activity. That's it. There are really only minor differences throughout so nobody should get credit for simply using something that worked so well for so many people recently.

The acting is okay, the set-up means that Asylum can actually revel in the cheap budget (not that they ever need an excuse for that, it would seem) and most of the shots/scenes aren't too bad simply because they're almost impossible to screw up.

BUT . . . . . . . and yes, this is a big BUT . . . . . . . I have to admit that I almost found this to be more entertaining than the movie it was so obviously trying to clone. The pacing, once things get underway, is a bit niftier and things feel a little bit nastier and, consequently, a little bit more "unsafe" for the viewer.

It may be unfair to give such a movie such a comparatively high rating but the concept keeps things from being too awful and, as I wasn't such a big fan of Paranormal Activity as everyone else and their dog, I really considered this to be a decent use of the same concept. Mind you, I can often be quite an undemanding viewer so bear that in mind.

See this if you like: Paranormal Activity, Noroi, The Blair Witch Project.
