I'd be lying if I said this was a masterpiece, but it isn't that bad
9 March 2014 | by (Valhalla) – See all my reviews

This is a game that I have picked up, put down, and looked up the walk-through for on the internet multiple times. I decided to pick it up because I thought based on the premise that it would be a fun game with a good story. In some cases, I was right but with others it isn't.

The plot is that you play one of the Four Horsemen of The Apocalypse, War. He inadvertently causes The Apocalypse too early and after a century he returns to Earth, which is now a battleground for Angels and Demons to clear his name. But the Charred Council (the peacekeepers of both Heaven and Hell) sends The Watcher to help and question War's actions. He works his way up a ladder of Elder Demons to eventually get to The Destroyer, who he is sure framed him.

Now the first thing you will be likely to notice about the game in terms of things to compliment is the graphics. Not because they look realistic but I just love the comic book-like style to everything in this game.

In terms of game-play, this is as mixed as mixed bags get. The slashing of random bad guys is really fun but with boss fights, they consist of fighting them in ways that you'll almost never guess. The Puzzle solving is okay but half the time you're caught off guard when the game presents you with one. This last one is a nitpick but could The Watcher do anything else other than say the objectives? I think it could be better if you get lost or something The Watcher points you to where you need to go.

And then there's the story. It's actually pretty good. I'm not even kidding. The only trouble is that the game-play gets in the way of the story rather than compliments it. After you defeat a boss I didn't really want to play after that to see where the story was going, because the game-play has some horrible faults.

So will I play the sequel? Yes. I think that they could strengthen the flaws of this one to a massive extent, plus that game is the one people remember this series for - at least based on what I've seen. This game is fun if you can get past the flaws. If you can't... I can see why but if you can then pick this one up because while it isn't the best game in the world it is certainly worth a look.
