This movie is based on the life of a friend of Tom Hanks called Jim Chandler.
According to Universal Pictures, almost 75% of the movie's audience on the picture's opening weekend was older than age 50.
When Larry is getting fired for not going to college Jack Strang (Rob Riggle) holds up his class ring and says "SMU Class of 1986. Solid gold. They weren't giving these things away." In 1986 SMU was given "The Death Penalty" by the NCAA for major infractions, including graduating students who had not earned an academic degree.
Tom Hanks performed a number of roles on this movie. Hanks was the lead actor, co-writer, producer and the film's director.
The last name of the lady at the bank is Gamelguard. This is a reference to That Thing You Do! (1996) (also with Tom Hanks). It is the same last name as the boy who last 'decently' kissed Faye (Liv Tyler). This is one of the last lines of the movie.

Nia Vardalos co-wrote this film with Tom Hanks. Hanks has worked with Vardalos before in a producing capacity on her films My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002), Connie and Carla (2004) and My Life in Ruins (2009). This movie is the first time that they have collaborated on a screenplay.
Chet Hanks, the son of Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks, appears in a bit part as a Pizza Delivery Boy. Rita also has a supporting role.
The fictional "U-Mart" where Larry works is actually a K-Mart. Based on the color scheme and the outtakes on the DVD where Tom Hanks mentions about being able to "find everything they need at K-Mart".
Given that he was going to be cast as the husband of Julia Roberts' character, Bryan Cranston went on an accelerated workout and diet regime. He also bleached his teeth white. Cranston claimed it was an attempt to come as close as possible to convince people that his character would be married to someone like Roberts, by having a younger looking character.

There are many references to the fact that Larry's last name is Crowne (crown logos etc.) including his alias, Lance Corona, as Corona in Spanish means exactly 'crown'.
Second top-billed star-teamed movie of Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts. Their first was Charlie Wilson's War (2007).
Julia Roberts had just begun shooting Eat Pray Love (2010) on location in Rome when she was first offered the script for this movie.
This is the 9th Julia Roberts film with a music score composed by James Newton Howard.

When the scooter "gang" rides into Larry's (Tom Hanks) neighborhood for the yard sale Lamar (Cedric The Entertainer) yells "We're being invaded!" which is a line from "That thing you do!" The line is first given by the character "Goofball" on the fictional set of "Weekend at party pier". Tom Hanks co-wrote and starred in "That thing you do!"
