Ridley Scott to direct 'The Vatican' pilot for Showtime

21 December 2012 10:30 AM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Showtime has just landed a major talent to helm its new pilot, "The Vatican." The network has announced that Ridley Scott is attached to direct the first episode of what is being called as a "provocative contemporary genre thriller about spirituality, power and politics -- set against the modern-day political machinations within the Catholic church."

This is far from the first time that Scott has dabbled in television. He has been the producer behind series like "The Good Wife," "Numb3rs," "The Pillars of the Earth" and "World Without End," though he has never directed a pilot before. Scott hasn't directed for television since the 1960s, before "Alien" was released.

Papal stories have been something of a hot topic in recent years. Showtime's "The Borgias," which stars Jeremy Irons, follows Pope Alexander VI and the Borgia dynasty at the pinnacle of the Roman Catholic Church. A third season of the show is coming in 2013. Similarly, »

Showtime developing a more modern, less horny pope drama called The Vatican

21 December 2012 9:49 AM, PST | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Though Showtime has enjoyed some success with The Borgias, the series represents a more sensationalist, pre-Homeland era at the network, when the balance between themes of political machinations and reckless horniness was tipped toward the latter. So the network's first pilot for 2013 is The Vatican, another pope drama about "spirituality, power and politics," but one set within the modern-day Catholic Church—a place where any horniness is a subject of obfuscation, rather than right out in the open, with Jeremy Irons banging everything in his big pope hat. Constituting another leap of faith, Ridley Scott has added »

James Cromwell Moving from American Horror Story: Asylum to Do No Harm

11 December 2012 2:26 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

James Cromwell has been utterly despicable in "American Horror Story: Asylum," and we love him for it. Now that he's signed on as a guest star in NBC's upcoming "Do No Harm," we have to wonder if he'll be turning back into the nice guy we usually see him portray.

TV Guide reports that Cromwell's character - a "renowned," but as yet unnamed, surgeon - will join Steven Pasquale's mysteriously afflicted brain doc Jason Cole (who turns into the Mr. Hyde-like Ian Price at the stroke of 9 each night) for an unspecified number of episodes.

We are loving the webisodes of Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome. It’s fun, if mildly frustrating, to watch them in serialized form like they did back in the ol’ days in the movie theaters, but we admit we’re also looking forward to getting that Blu-ray in February!

Please note that the final episode will be going live on December 7, not November 30 as we were told originally. Also note that, if you’re seeing this in time, showrunner David Eick will reportedly be live commenting on the Machinima Prime video at 1pm Pacific time today.

Otherwise, feel free to watch episodes 3 and 4 right here and now, below the press release (and please note that the episodes 3 and 4 are presented as one continuous episode).

Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome – are you glad to see Adama again?

Fans will have glimpsed leaked clips of the space-opera prequel pilot – but finally we have a chance to see the whole thing, albeit in small chunks on YouTube. What do you make of it?

When the reimagined Battlestar Galactica reached its climax three years ago there was already talk of spin-off shows. The prequel series, Caprica, showing the birth of the dreaded Cylon robot-race, came and went in a 19-episode single season. Caprica was far from terrible – but despite being set in a colonial empire of 12 worlds, planet-hopping and outer-space action were kept to an inexplicable bare minimum.

As a response, Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome, another prequel series placing the action between Caprica and BSG, was mooted. The idea was to cover the Cylon war from the point of view of a young Ensign William Adama, later to become the gruff Admiral Adama. It was to be all conflict: »

Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome, the Syfy pilot for a Galactica prequel series that was not picked up, will begin its monthlong web debut via Machinima's Prime YouTube channel tomorrow. The uncut version won't make its debut until February 19, 2013, the release date for Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome on Blu-ray and DVD.

Unfortunately we do not know how long the edited version coming to Machinima is or I would be able to tell you how many minutes have been tacked on for home video. My guess is one or two at most.

It doesn't look like Universal will be packing any bonus features into the Blu-ray release of Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome. They will, however, include the pilot on DVD, digital copy and »
