Film and TV Production Heats Up in Budapest

16 May 2013 4:00 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The Hungarian capital, Budapest, couldn’t be hotter.

“This year feels like one of the busiest the (Budapest production) community’s had since the tax rebate came into existence. The capacity of the town is at its maximum,” says Adam Goodman, who runs Hungarian production services company Mid Atlantic Films with partner Howard Ellis.

Recent pics that Mid Atlantic has serviced include Universal’s “47 Ronin,” Paramount’s “World War Z” and 20th Century Fox’s “A Good Day to Die Hard.” It’s now working on Brett Ratner’s pic “Hercules” for MGM-Paramount.

In TV, the company co-produces Showtime series “The Borgias,” NBCU’s “Dracula” and the pilot of HBO’s Cold War thriller “The Missionary.”

Goodman applauds the work of Andy Vajna, the Hungarian film commissioner, for making coin available for foreign productions to access the rebate should they fail to attach a local sponsor.

Global competition in the incentives sweepstakes is fierce. »

Mickey Sumner Talks Frances Ha, Working with Director Noah Baumbach, Shooting in New York City, The Borgias, Cbgb, and More

14 May 2013 5:55 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Mickey Sumner shines in a fantastic supporting role playing Sophie, the lifelong best friend of Greta Gerwig’s titular heroine, in Frances Ha, co-written by Gerwig and director Noah Baumbach.  Shot in black and white against the backdrop of New York City, this modern comic fable about the 20-something generation explores love, friendship, self-doubt, and finding your way in life.  Sumner and Gerwig’s natural on-screen chemistry makes their characters funny and relatable and fuels some of the film’s most insightful and best comedic moments. I recently landed an exclusive interview with Sumner who talked to me about the liberating experience of playing a role without a script, how she identified with her character, working with an amazing cast, Baumbach’s directing style, her reaction to seeing the film premiere at Telluride, why she loves being in front of the camera, and what she learned interning during summer holidays with her godmother, »

TV Review: The Borgias: Season 3, Episode 5: The Wolf and the Lamb

The Borgias The Wolf and the Lamb Review. The Borgias: Season 3, Episode 5: The Wolf and the Lamb‘s greatest aspect was the unexpected. 'The Borgias' turns Francois Arnaud into a 'vain monster'

12 May 2013 1:00 PM, PDT | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

The sentence "It's not easy being the pope's son" is one rarely used in modern times. And yet the case remains: It's a challenge.

Take, for example, Cesare Borgia (Francois Arnaud) -- young, good-looking, charismatic, just looking for a little bit of love (from his sister), respect (from his weakened pop, the pope) and power (from an army that tends to be fairly fickle). It's enough to drive a man to kill his reckless brother.

At least that's how things have shaped up on "The Borgias," airing Sundays on Showtime.

"I think it's great that you follow this well-intentioned boy -- who is seemingly innocent -- that turns into this vain monster without really realizing it," Arnaud tells Zap2it. "It's not a decision that he makes consciously."

This season, after surviving a near-fatal assassination attempt, Pope Alexander VI (Academy Award winner Jeremy Irons), born Rodrigo Borgia, responds with an »

Cancelled?

8 May 2013 12:59 PM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Is "The Borgias" getting cancelled? Maybe, but Showtime is keeping it vague.

According to Deadline, the final episodes of Season 3 may be the series' last, and creator Neil Jordan has his sights set on a movie.

“I would like to finish it with a two-hour movie,” he told the British press at a launch campaign. “Another 10 episodes is kind of exhausting. I’ve mapped out a movie, which, if (Showtime brass) agree, will shoot in June with the same cast, and finally the Pope will die horribly.”

"The Borgias," which stars Jeremy Irons as Pope Alexander VI, centers on the Borgia family and their constant struggle for power.

Besides the fact that tatings for the Showtime series were down in its second season, there's another reason why Season 3 could be the end of "The Borgias." The cable channel already has another Catholic Church-set drama, "The Vatican" (which stars "Friday Night Lights »

‘The Borgias’ Might Not Return For Season Four

8 May 2013 5:24 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

If you are a fan of Showtime’s cult show The Borgias you might be sad to know that the creator of the show Neil Jordan has said that season four might not happen, despite the fact that it had always been on the cards. Don’t fret though, Jordan did say that he plans on doing a movie instead. Speaking on a press tour for season three,  he said:

“I would like to finish it with a two-hour movie. Another 10 episodes is kind of exhausting. I’ve mapped out a movie, which, if (Showtime) agree, will shoot in June with the same cast, and finally the Pope will die horribly.”

The Borgias season three recently kicked off in the USA, but the most recent episode has seen viewing figures picking back up to season two’s numbers. If the fan support is behind The Borgias, you might have to do season four Mr Jordan! »

"The Borgias" To Wrap With TV Movie

7 May 2013 11:47 PM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

While no final decision has been made, it is looking likely that Showtime's "The Borgias" will forgo its planned fourth and final season in favor of a two-hour telemovie to wrap its story.

The series is currently in the midst of a ten episode third season, and the plan was to originally match the four season layout of Showtime's predecessor "The Tudors".

Now though, creator Neil Jordan appears to have changed his mind. He tells the British press:

"I would like to finish it with a two-hour movie. Another ten episodes is kind of exhausting. I’ve mapped out a movie, which, if (Showtime brass) agree, will shoot in June with the same cast, and finally the Pope will die horribly."

No final decision is expected until after the currently airing third season ends in mid-late June.

The Borgias: To End with a Movie, Not Season Four?

7 May 2013 11:10 PM, PDT | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

According to Deadline, things aren't looking too good for Showtime's The Borgias. It's being reported that the historical drama may not get a fourth season and instead finish off the ongoing storylines with a movie.

A final decision about the show's future isn't likely to be be made until season three finishes airing. Though The Borgas is a beautiful series and boasts talented performers, it's not a ratings hit. The initial airings of season three episodes have been averaging just 570,000 viewers -- on par with season two.

As reported earlier, series creator Neil Jordan has said that he envisioned The Borgias running for four years. However, while promoting season three, Jordan told the British press, "I would like to finish it with a two-hour movie... Another 10 episodes is kind of exhausting. I’ve mapped out a movie, which, if [the Showtime executives] agree, »

'Borgias' canceled? Season 4 may morph into two hour finale special

7 May 2013 6:50 PM, PDT | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Showtime's soapy historical drama "The Borgias" could be headed for a premature end after three seasons.

Deadline is reporting that Showtime is currently leaning toward scrapping a planned Season 4 of the show in favor of a two hour wrap-up movie instead. While four full seasons would match the run of "Borgias" unofficial predecessor "The Tudors," Showtime recently transformed the fourth and final season of "The Big C" into a limited series of four one hour episodes.

Series creator Neil Jordan indicated "Borgias" could be headed for a similar fate earlier this year in an interview with U.K.'s Broadcast.

"['Borgias' has] gone on for three years and there's only four years in it," Jordan said. "At the moment, we're discussing it with Showtime. I would like to finish it with a two-hour movie. Another 10 episodes is kind of exhausting. I've mapped out a movie, which, if they agree, will shoot in June with the same cast, »

Showtime’s ‘The Borgias’ Not Likely To Do Season 4, Might Wrap With Two-Hour Movie

7 May 2013 4:32 PM, PDT | Deadline TV | See recent Deadline TV news »

I hear that there is a strong possibility the current third season of Showtime‘s Borgias is the papal drama’s last as a regular series. No final decisions have been made, with Showtime brass expected to wait until Season 3 ends its run, but I hear the drama, created by Neil Jordan, is considering wrapping its story with a two-hour movie. The Borgias producers originally envisioned the series starring Jeremy Irons as the cunning Pope Alexander VI as going for four seasons, matching the run of Showtime predecessor The Tudors. But during the recent launch campaign for Season 3, Jordan indicated that he had changed plans. “I would like to finish it with a two-hour movie,” he told the British press. “Another 10 episodes is kind of exhausting. I’ve mapped out a movie, which, if (Showtime brass) agree, will shoot in June with the same cast, and finally the Pope will die horribly. »

Brenton Thwaites ("Maleficent"), Nat Wolff ("Admission"), Nick Robinson ("The Kings of Summer"), Noah Silver ("The Borgias") and Ansel Elgort ("Divergent") are all set to test this weekend for the lead male role in the film adaptation of novelist John Green's young adult novel "The Fault in Our Stars" at 20th Century Fox.

As development continues on the feature film adaptation of author John Green’s incredibly well-received 2012 novel The Fault in Our Stars, the producers are now turning to filling the crucial role of the film’s male lead.  The Descendants star Shailene Woodley has already been cast as the protagonist and female lead Hazel, a cancer-stricken teen who strikes up a charming and heartbreaking relationship with the dashing Augustus Waters, whom she meets in a cancer support group.  A number of actresses fought hard for the Hazel part, and a similar competition has apparently developed over the role of “Gus” as a new report claims that five young actors will be testing for the role this weekend.  Hit the jump for more. Fox had no comment.

Josh Boone is on board to direct the adaptation based on John Green’s book.

Paul Risker looks at Starz's Spartacus and its place amongst the historical epics of the big and small screen...

By the time Steven S. DeKnight brought his vision of Spartacus: Blood and Sand to the small screen in January of 2010, the story of Spartacus’ revolt against the might of the Roman Empire and its legendary war machine had both been told and re-imagined.

The story was told none so famously as in Stanley Kubrick’s Spartacus (1960), and re-imagined forty years later in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator. To look beyond these two filmmakers, the story of Spartacus’ uprising and his part in the Third Servile War against the Republic has been an influential force on storytellers, spanning literature, film and television. In this latest incarnation DeKnight offers his take on this legendary, yet ambiguous figure. If the list of stories available to storytellers comprises a short list, then DeKnight was treading »

Vikings Season Finale: Creator Michael Hirst talks about the finale and beyond

28 April 2013 1:46 PM, PDT | BuzzFocus.com | See recent BuzzFocus.com news »

The Season Finale of History Channel’s Vikings is here and BuzzFocus was on call with creator and showrunner, Michael Hirst, who also created The Tudors and Camelot, and was an executive producer on The Borgias. He shared with us his thoughts on last week’s episode, “Sacrifice,” tonight’s finale, and Season 2.

Last week’s pivotal episode, “Sacrifice” saw Ragnar and his crew visit Gamla Uppsala to pay sacrifice to the gods. Hirst was asked where the relationship of our main characters goes after Ragnar tried to have Athelstan sacrificed:

Michael Hirst: Strangely  enough there isn’t an immediate fallout from that because one of the things Athelstan will come to understand was that Ragnar wasn’t going to sacrifice him because he hated him or he thought he was disposable. He wanted to sacrifice him because he thought he was worthy as sacrifice; he liked him. It »
