Plot Summary

  • The men of the 1st Marine Division leave Melbourne and on the day after Christmas 1944, land on the beach at Cape Gloucester. They encounter little initial resistance - reminiscent of their landing at Guadalcanal - but the jungle and the weather work against them. It rains almost constantly affecting the men's morale and their health. Bob Leckie has been assigned to the battalion Intelligence officer but like the others, feels that the jungle is closing in on him. They are eventually evacuated to Pavuvu where Leckie falls seriously ill. He spends some time at the hospital in Banika before eventually returning to his unit. Back in the US, Eugene Sledge undergoes training at a Marine camp in California.

  • After the happy Australian Christmas holiday and training, the marines ship back to war on New Britain (Solomon Islands). The Japanese they can deal with by now, but the merciless rain and general jungle discomfort ruin moral, leading to strive, Canadian Lebec even commits suicide. Leckie himself suffers from uresis (bed-wetting) and is entrusted to the psychiatrist in a safe island hospital, which he experiences as a hell-hole for human wreckage, aspiring only to return to his mates. Eugene Sledge has finally been accepted into the Marine corps and struggles trough tough a boot-camp in California.

  • Finally enlisted as a Marine, Sledge trains for combat at Camp Elliott. The 1st Marine Division lands at Cape Gloucester on the Japanese-held island of New Britain. As Leckie and the other Marines battle the Japanese, they quickly realize that the more ominous enemy is the smothering jungle itself. Having survived Gloucester and stationed on the godforsaken island of Pavuvu, Leckie begins displaying the physical and mental effects of combat and is sent to a naval hospital on nearby Banika for psychiatric observation.
