William Kemmler was the first man sentenced to death by electrocution for the murder of his common law wife Tillie Ziegler on August 6, 1890.
"I Can't Sing Sing" was a song written by William Kemmier while on death row. It was published in the Buffalo Evening News along with the commentary that if Kemmier wasn't being executed for his crimes he should be for his poor rhyming abilities.
The electric chair was tested out on a full size horse the previous day to make sure it would work for William Kemmler's execution.
