Well done, but....
Interesting early production of Sheridan's 'classic' play from a still young BBC. The most interesting thing about the production is the chance to see a very young and very thin Joan Plowright. Indeed she is about the best thing to see in this production. The only other actor I recognized is Felix Aylmer, who is basically playing the same part he played for many, many years. The voice will be immediately recognizable to anyone who has seen a British film from the 50's or 60's. Obviously the play was filmed on a soundstage, and there are a few 'flubs' in the dialogue, so it was obviously filmed 'live' with multiple cameras. Unfortunately the 'performances' are mostly stage performances with no nuances or subtleties. This all makes for a rather dull presentation on the whole, and makes it difficult to understand why this is a 'classic'. Maybe if there would subtitles so one could understand all the dialogue. It may be an important social satire, but it's difficult to judge given the lackluster presentation.
