So I got this on Amazon awhile back (just to find out I could watch it for free on Youtube for free, thanks for the memo Carey!) because I wanted to learn more about the cosplaying community. However, I was surprised to see that the majority of this documentary is focused on Anime. I understand that many of the cosplayers base their costumes off of Anime characters, but this film shouldn't be titled Cosplayers the movie if it's mostly about anime and it's various forms.
It's sad to see such wasted potential in a documentary, because the topic is an interesting one. I was trying as hard as possible to enjoy this, but there was nothing to be learned from it! I assume that the director, Carey Martell, just walked around a couple of conventions with a camera and microphone to make this film, which shows how much dedication he really has to make a good movie. I didn't learn about Cosplaying's history, rise to fame, or purpose. Speaking of purpose, most documentaries have some sort of message it tries to get across, (For instance, Super Size Me, eating Mcdonald's constantly is terrible for your health, or Wal Mart: The High Cost Of Low Prices message of the vital importance of supporting local businesses)however, when it comes to Cosplayers: The Movie, I can't find one other than, some people like to dress up as characters.
I'm a big documentary nut, and while I may not be the best reviewer, I must say that this documentary may just be the worst one I've ever seen in my life. I didn't learn anything, it was incredibly slow, and I was really happy to see it end. It's just bad.
