Charles Burnett’s Road to Oscar Was Paved by Socially Conscious Storytelling

Charles Burnett’s Road to Oscar Was Paved by Socially Conscious Storytelling
Given the amount of recognition he’s received from film critics and the number of awards he’s received over the course of his career, it’s not surprising that Charles Burnett was selected to receive an honorary Academy Award — unless you’re Charles Burnett, that is, in which case you’re still struggling to process the news.

“I didn’t know what to think,” says Burnett. “It’s one of those things you never expect, so there was no way it was on my mind. It just took me by surprise. And I’m still surprised.”

Although he was born in Vicksburg, Miss., Burnett was only a few years old when his family moved to Watts, the Los Angeles neighborhood that would ultimately serve as the setting for his debut feature film, “Killer of Sheep.” Originally submitted as Burnett’s Master of Fine Arts thesis at UCLA in 1977, “Killer of Sheep” was selected for preservation in the

King Kong Makes a Friend in Skull Island Interactive Poster

King Kong Makes a Friend in Skull Island Interactive Poster
Warner Bros. has released a new banner for their highly-anticipated Kong: Skull Island, which is gearing up for release on March 10 and could very well be one of this spring's most highly-anticipated movies. The banner reveals a very interesting image, with Brie Larson's Weaver getting so close she can actually touch King Kong's face. While this massive beast doesn't necessarily seem too thrilled about being touched, Weaver is still alive, after all, so perhaps this ape has a soft spot for her. If you want an even closer look at this banner, then you're in luck.

The banner debuted on the movie's official Twitter, but on Facebook there is an interactive 360 version, where you can get a closer look at the imagery on this poster. It's worth noting that the cast members at the top of this banner includes Terry Notary, who may not be a household name,

'Straight Outta Compton' Dominates Box Office Again with $26.8M

'Straight Outta Compton' Dominates Box Office Again with $26.8M
Straight Outta Compton is the kind of late summer blockbuster studios only dream about. We're officially in the doldrums, before the fall movie season hits, and this biopic about legendary West Coast rappers N.W.A continues to over perform and beat all expectations. In it's second weekend, it crushed three new releases that completely underwhelmed. But even with Straight Outta Compton's victory lap, no one is calling this a tough weekend to beat the competition.

Straight Outta Compton managed to pull in a clean $26.8 million playing at 3,025 locations around the country. That propels its grand total stateside haul to $111.5 million. It is without a doubt a major hit, with Universal and Legendary budgeting the film at a mere $29 million. The film hasn't arrived without controversy, though, and the film has been slammed for leaving out some dirty misconduct amongst its main crew.

Coming under the most heavy fire was Dr. Dre,

Box Office: ‘Straight Outta Compton’ Schools ‘Sinister 2,’ ‘Hitman: Agent 47’ With $26.8 Million

Box Office: ‘Straight Outta Compton’ Schools ‘Sinister 2,’ ‘Hitman: Agent 47’ With $26.8 Million
Straight Outta Compton” dominated a trio of underwhelming new releases this weekend, providing a little proof of life in an otherwise moribund box office.

The rap drama topped charts for the second weekend in a row, picking up $26.8 million from 3,025 locations and propelling its domestic haul to $111.5 million. That’s a tidy return on the $29 million that Universal and Legendary spent making the film about the early days of N.W.A.

Straight Outta Compton” hasn’t been without controversy. The film has been slammed for glossing over its members’ treatment of women and the blowback forced Dr. Dre to apologize for his actions. The negative headlines do not appear to be taking a toll on its ticket sales.

Of the new films hitting multiplexes, “Sinister 2” performed the best of an inert bunch. The low-budget horror sequel nabbed $10.6 million from 2,766 locations for a third place finish. That’s less than the

Box Office: ‘Straight Outta Compton’ Will Dwarf ‘Hitman: Agent 47,’ ‘American Ultra’

Box Office: ‘Straight Outta Compton’ Will Dwarf ‘Hitman: Agent 47,’ ‘American Ultra’
Straight Outta Compton” could move from gold to platinum territory in its second weekend of release.

The rap drama from Universal and Legendary will continue to dominate the box office, earning an estimated $30 million and pushing its domestic haul past the $100 million mark. That’s a nice return, considering the fact that producing the N.W.A biopic only set the partners back $29 million. To capitalize on the strong word of mouth, the film will add more than 200 theaters to its current crop of 2,757 locations.

With its unstinting look at urban poverty, “Straight Outta Compton” may be the year’s most unorthodox blockbuster. Its continued success could spell trouble for a trio of new releases hoping to make a splash during the dog days of summer.

Of these new entrants, “Sinister 2,” a micro-budget horror venture from Blumhouse and Focus Features, should be the least impacted. The sequel to 2012’s “Sinister” should pull in $15 million,
