A third option provided

This short subject film is produced by the Mormon Church and gives us an encapsulated life of one of the founding fathers of the Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints. It's a sincere and moving story by an admittedly less than professional cast.

Tanner was a wealthy landowner in the north country of New York state and had a wife and many children and all the material goods one could wish for. He developed what sounds like an ulcerated leg with gangrene and had the choice of dying or having said leg cut off.

There was in fact a third option provided. Tanner was a lay figure in the Baptist Church which was at the time trying to stamp out this cult as they saw it started by Joseph Smith. He was part of the group doing this. But after some healing words were spoke over him the leg miraculously healed.

After that in a monetary way there was nothing that could not be asked of this man. From a Saint Paul type figure Tanner morphs into something equivalent of Haym Solomon and Robert Morris, financial geniuses who gave all they had for the American Revolution.

I've seen several productions about the early history of the church and I give these reviews some charity knowing that I'm not dealing name players. They're qualitatively better than evangelical Christian films and I will say I think they do a remarkable job in portraying America of what we call the Jacksonian Era when these events are occurring.

Treasure In Heaven is probably best for LDS audiences and for those of us gentiles who've taken an interest in the history of the church.
