Storyline

Although he vowed to Robin and Marshall that he would never tell them, Ted finally tells his kids that at one time both Robin and Marshall used to smoke. In 2009, they both felt like they had good reason to do so. Marshall, only an occasional smoker, always said that each cigarette was his last. But when his old boss, the meanest man nicknamed Artillery Arthur, became his new boss, he thought he was going to be fired - again. So when Marshall found out that Arthur was a smoker, Marshall used it as a bonding mechanism to keep his job. Robin, at the time anchoring the morning show, had just gotten a new co-anchor named Don Frank. Don was a career morning show host, moving from morning show to morning show across the country. Robin hated Don for what he represented: a person who had given up on his career, stating that they were on a nothing show that nobody watched. Deep down, Robin feared that he was right. So when she managed to get a scheduled on-air interview with then New York City... Written by Huggo

Trivia

When everyone is smoking on the roof, there's a Tim Horton's coffee tin on the table being used for the butts. A nod to Robin's Canadian-ness. See more »

Goofs

The scenes showing Ted's children are from the original pilot where they are wearing different clothes and the set is slightly different. The reason for this is the need to use the reaction they give in the pilot when Ted tells Robin that he loves her on their first date. The same reaction is used in "Last Cigarette Ever" when the kids find out about the cigarette smoking. By Season 5, no new scenes of the kids' reactions were being shot because they were getting too old to look the same as the first 2 seasons. Thus, the need to use the old footage from the pilot. Quotes

Robin Scherbatsky: If I can't even get my best friends to watch, who's gonna watch?
Marshall Eriksen: Lots of people! You've got bed ridden insomniacs, bums camping outside a department store, people waiting in the ER, where the TV is in a cage so you can't change the channel...
Lily Aldrin: Oh, do you have any stalkers?
Robin Scherbatsky: Yeah. But even Leonard won't watch the show.

Worst HIMYM Episode Ever
10 December 2012 | by (Whitman, MA) – See all my reviews

I really like HIMYM. I've seen every episode at least once, which allows me to definitively say that "Last Cigarette Ever" is the worst one. There are many reasons why I feel this way, but the two big reasons are: 1. It made no sense. Up to this point, I believe only Robin had ever been shown smoking a cigarette. Now all of a sudden, they all are smokers. I'm not going to pretend that the writers haven't made mistakes before, but this was a little ridiculous. 2. It felt like a half-hour Marlboro ad. I think the intent was to discourage smoking, but I personally felt like it did the opposite. Awful episode in an otherwise very good series.
