Film Feature: The 10 Worst Films of 2011

29 December 2011 4:16 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – With 2012 staring us in the face like a bad movie concept (oops), it’s time to go over the worst films of 2011, if only to purge the refuse from our souls. If you think film critiquing is martinis with F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald – or the plot to “Midnight in Paris” – then strap in and read on.

If we were to add up the percentages of the 2011 film release year, the larger number of star ratings would fall in the middle to horrible category of the please-please-me range, but that is the nature of populist movie-making. The film business is about demographics and butts-in-the-seats, and what’s on screen – as long as it has a vampire in it – has become irrelevant. Can we all handle that truth? Thank goodness for awards season.

But I digress. Just missing the 10th spot was “Country Strong,” “Arthur,” “Hop,” “Your Highness,” “Take Me Home Tonight” and “The Smurfs. »

The Truffles 2011 – The HeyUGuys Movie Awards – Part 1

21 December 2011 4:00 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Back for their third year we are proud to present the annual HeyUGuys movie awards – The Truffles.

At the end of each year our wonderful team of writers like to round up the various movieland highs and lows into our own unique categories, to reward the diverse, the challenging and the downright lovely and both tar and feather the cinematic outcasts which offended, disgusted and just plain irritated us.

It has been a tremendous year with some intriguing debuts and some howling missteps from seasonal filmmakers. We had planets colliding, blocks attacked, apes rising and the usual spew of remakes, sequels, prequels and the rest.

Here’s our take on the filmic landscape after a whole year of 2011.

First up on stage…

Not only were we offered a loving and thoroughly entertaining tribute to those scuzzy, »

AFI Fest Review: You’ll Want To Spend More Than Just a Week With Williams in ‘My Week With Marilyn’

7 November 2011 4:06 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

The life of a celebrity (regardless of what they are famous for or what era we may be in) is a confounding and, at times, seemingly crazy circus of people, cameras, and lights. We have seen it with the young starlets rising (and falling) today to those featured in films like Country Strong, which try and show what it is like to live in the eye of that storm. Surrounded by yes-men and an unquestioned supply of pills, you begin to wonder what is fantasy and what is reality. In the trailer for My Week With Marilyn we see Marilyn (Michelle Williams) ask Colin Clark (Eddie Redmayne) if she “should be her,” meaning what the public thinks of when they think of Marilyn Monroe – the eyes, the lips, and the hips – hinting at the idea that there is more to Marilyn when she lets you behind that closed dressing room door. Tron: Legacy’s Garrett Hedlund in Talks for Akira

3 November 2011 12:50 PM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Looks like this movie is finally moving forward. Earlier this year, we reported that a live-action version of the popular Japanese manga “Akira” was actually going to happen, with Robert Pattinson, Andrew Garfield and James McAvoy being considered for the role of Tetsuo, while the more vital role of Kaneda is being narrowed down to Garrett Hedlund, Michael Fassbender, Chris Pine, Justin Timberlake and Joaquin Phoenix. Then in October, the film got the official green-light from Warner Bros. with “Tron: Legacy” star Garrett Hedlund still being considered for one of the lead roles. Well, cut to today, and the “Country Strong” star is now in talks for the role of Kaneda. WB acquired the tentpole project for a seven-figure sum from Japanese manga publisher Kodansha in 2008. Set in New Manhattan, the cyberpunk sci-fi epic follows the leader of a biker gang who must save his friend, discovered with potentially destructive psychokinetic abilities, »

Garrett Hedlund in Talks to Star in Akira

3 November 2011 12:34 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

A few weeks ago, we reported that Warner Bros. may be trying to turn Jaume Collett-Serra's Akira remake into a cure for insomnia by making Tron: Legacy star Garrett Hedlund the frontrunner for the lead role.  Now it looks like he'll have it because according to Variety [and first reported by Twitch] Hedlund is in talks with WB to play Kaneda.  Warner Bros. couldn't make an offer to Hedlund until the budget was in place and I'm assuming the offer was, "You starred in Tron: Legacy and you're getting a second chance at a major sci-fi blockbuster.  You're welcome."  If you think I'm being overly harsh on Hedlund, please direct me to the movie where he gave a magnetic and captivating performance. But maybe he hasn't been given the chance.  Maybe films like Georgia Rule and Country Strong haven't provided Hedlund with the chance to shine.  However, he's playing Dean Moriarty in the adaptation of On the Road, »

Garrett Hedlund in Talks for ‘Akira’ [Updated]

3 November 2011 11:00 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

[1] [Update: Variety [2] has just confirmed that Garrett Hedlund is in negotiations to star as Kaneda in Jaume Collet-Serra's Akira. Original story follows.] Speculation on who would be cast in the lead character of Kaneda has abounded just as long as reports of a live-action American remake of Akira have been floating around, with Keanu Reeves, Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, and James Franco among the names who've been rumored over the past few years. But as the film has inched closer to reality, with Warner Bros. giving the green light [3] to the Jaume Collet-Serra-helmed incarnation last month, Tron: Legacy's Garrett Hedlund emerged as the frontrunner to star in the film. Now a new report says he's just received a formal offer for the role. More details after the jump. Twitch [4] was the first to break the story, though they don't specify how exactly they obtained the information. If Hedlund accepts, »

Contagion (review)

24 October 2011 5:37 AM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

Ohmygod the germs, the germs! They’re everywhere! On our hands. On everything we touch! Credit cards, bowls of nuts on the bar, poles on the bus, our phones, our kids... Get the antiseptic! Director Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter Scott Z. Burns -- who previously collaborated on the slyly witty The Informant! -- go for plausibly realistic horror here: Contagion is The Stand without Satan stalking the Earth (though Matt Damon [The Adjustment Bureau] gets to be a bit Stu Redman-ish), a terrifyingly credible look at what will all in likelihood happen if and when a newly mutated bug to which we have no immunity gets loose in the enormous -- and enormously mobile -- human population. (It’s probably rather optimistic, actually, about the near collapse of civilization.) Intriguingly, the nightmare begins on Day 2 of a planetary pandemic, when Gwyneth Paltrow’s (Country Strong) traveling American executive, on her way home from a business trip to China, »

Who Scored First On Glamour's Sexiest Male Poll?

4 October 2011 11:02 AM, PDT | Celebsology | See recent Celebsology news »

Rob Pattinson truly is a beautiful, beautiful man. He not only won this year but also beat out some of the hottest male celebrities out there for a third consecutive year in a row!

You did it Twilight fans! Glamour magazine will be featuring the news in its upcoming edition. What a coincidence that girlfriend Kristen Stewart heads the cover for it.

Other candidates in the poll included George Clooney, Jake Gyllenhaall, Alexander Skarsgard, Bradley Cooper, Darren Criss, Ryan Reynolds, Justin Bieber and Prince Harry. Glee's Darren Criss making the list is well deserved. His fans pretty much made producers keep him as a regular for its third season. Justin Bieber though? Little teen tweens should not be reading Glamour, therefore, their opinion shouldn't be accounted for. That's a lame excuse but its lame Justin was even being considered.

The king of musical television has his eye on a new adventure.

That’s right, "Glee" creator Ryan Murphy now wants to conquer a musical movie starring none other than "Glee’s" favorite substitute teacher, Gwyneth Paltrow. Murphy wants to write an original movie starring Paltrow and Maya Rudolph, telling E! Online, "We want to do a musical together, I want to write an original movie for Gwyneth and Maya Rudolph, both of whom I'm great friends with."

You can’t deny the magic that happens when these two work together. In 2006, Murphy directed the film “Running with Scissors," a dramedy based on Augusten Burroughs 2002 memoir, starring Paltrow. Also, this year she won an Emmy for her guest appearance on "Glee."

Although, Murphy is being quite hush hush about his ideas for the new film, he has disclosed where his inspiration will come from. He really enjoyed »
