Storyline

An elderly couple, the Lovgrens, are murdered at their isolated farmstead and Mrs. Lovgren's last word to Wallander seems to be "Foreigners." When this is leaked to the press a migrant labourers' camp is torched and a foreign worker shot by anonymous right wing vigilantes. Daughter Linda, dating a Syrian doctor, accuses Wallander of racism and, although Lovgren's brother-in-law tells the police that the dead man had a hidden fortune, which his murderers stole, and an illegitimate son, neither fact is immediately helpful. However, Wallander's obsessive pursuit of the owner of a car used in the revenge killing yields a result, though it almost costs him his job and the Lovgrens' slayers are finally cornered in a fairground. Goofs

The bandage on Wallander's hand disappears a couple of times. When he is driving to the farm (when he finds the satchel) he wipes his left hand across his face and there is no bandage. When he is at the farm, the bandage is there. A second time, when he is driving away from his father's house, he again wipes his left hand across his face and the bandage is gone. Next scene, the bandage is back. See more »

Issues of Xenophobia and Racism
11 November 2015 | by See all my reviews

For being so insightful and dogged, Kurt Wallander really does some stupid and impractical things in his work. He fails to call in backup until he has been assaulted or discovered. He stares at suspects until they recognize him as a threat. He allows his emotions to get the better of him. That aside, this is an interesting case. Two farm inhabitants are brutally murdered. It turns out that unbeknownst to most, the farmer had amassed a fortune, even though he never gave any indication. This seems to be the motive for the murders. Unfortunately, the dying woman makes a sound like "foreigners" when Kurt is holding her and this gets out. Every racist and bigot begins to use this to put them in attack mode. This issue is also brought forth to us when Kurt finds his daughter is serious with a guy who happens to be Mid-Eastern. He is obviously not happy with this and must face his own shortcomings. Murders are committed and Wallander is filled with guilt. Things he said have been leaked to the press. The episode is didactic but works pretty well.
