31 May 2010Sidney's world-class National Dance Academy holds its annual audition process. Among the hopefuls are Christian Reed, who does everything right except bring a leotard, and sheep rancher Neil Webster's naive daughter, Tara, who soon discovers she's not nearly as ready as she taught (making a spectacle of herself even when not tricked by her shrewd roommate, Abigail), yet whose natural talent may still make her lifelong ballet-dream come true.
Season 1, Episode 2: Week Zero
1 June 2010The audition results are mailed to the candidates' homes. The winners move to the National Academy's Sidney dorm for their first semester. Introduction week traditionally involves some hosing and hazing, but light-built Sammy Lieberman's greatest concern is a lazy administrator forcing him to become a sassy girl's roommate, although that may also have its advantages when they come to terms.
2 June 2010Newbie Christian is arrested for petty street gang-crime. Since his only adult relative (big brother Drew, a Broken Hill miner) won't take him in, academy director Kennedy arranges to save Christian from juvenile detention by assigning him to the dorm and appealing to coolest senior Ethan to be his mentor, but neither knave wants that and Ethan catches Christian stealing his wallet. Sam makes Tara list pros and cons for whether or not to make a pass at Ethan, who just dumped another girlfriend, which Abigail finds and sends copies to everyone. Sam also works out that karaoke may be a cool way to chase off horrible roommates. Tara makes a spectacle of herself again when Christain arrives in her class and fears she may never get past the bar exercises stage.
Season 1, Episode 4: Minefield
3 June 2010Instructor Patrick assigns the boy-girl dance partners lot-drawn confidence test games as preparation to the technical pas-de-deux course. Although meant to help them bond, they work mainly as truth time tests. Christian's talent impresses, but he intends to quit after his juvenile probation.
4 June 2010Sammy fears his single B could cause his dad, a third-generation Jewish doctor, to withdraw him from Dance Academy and send him to med-school. He's desperate to make it to synagogue in time to act as reader (another condition) but is commandeered for Patrick's coinciding ballet class, which he's missed too often already. Finally, Dr. Lieberman comes to discuss withdrawing Sam with director Kennedy. Meanwhile, Christian proves himself the best pupil in Patrick's class but can't handle Patrick's tactile limb position corrections.
Season 1, Episode 6: Perfection
7 June 2010Sammy finally gets a visit from his girlfriend-since-ever Mia, who'd joined Swedish friends in a kibbutz in Israel. Kat and Ethan's mother (famous ballerina Natasha Willis) gives a guest lecture. While Kat can't be bothered to spend time with her, Tara drools and ignores everyone else. Natasha offers them Swan Lake tickets with backstage passes, but those actually cause trouble among the kids, especially for Sam, who accepts them to get Abigail to go out with him while telling Mia the tickets 'fell trough'.
8 June 2010The ballet class naturally doesn't take to obligatory hip-hop lessons, where everything is the other way around (except for ever-versatile Christian). Ethan, who has a modern choreography assignment for Mr. Kennedy due, calls in his theft silence-marker ("You owe me") to pick Christian as his star dancer. Christian dismisses the project but later shows Ethan a street group, which inspires Ethan toward a much rougher dance. Sammy wrestles with admitting his feelings, risking ridicule of the kind Tara often gets (even from him), while haughty Kat claims never to have had a crush.
9 June 2010Christian firmly wards off Sean's taunting of roommate Sam for wearing regular underwear. Patrick orders Christian to help buy reluctant Sam some dance underwear. Sam's objections are overcome in the fitting-room, where he procrastinates to give Christian time to flirt with the salesgirl, who ends up giving him her phone number. Ethan tells Tara he only sees her as a kid sister, not dating material. She hopes to cause jealousy by seeming to flirt with pro-dance troop member Damien 'Damo' Lang, not realizing such a rumor could ruin both their careers. Abigail is becoming more of a woman than she likes.
Season 1, Episode 9: Heartbeat
10 June 2010Due to Sammy posting some dormitory playfulness on the Internet, R&B star Myles Kelly - idolized by most of the kids - picks for his next video the haughtily uninterested Kat. She only accepts if he'll consider modernizing costumes and choreography. Her suggestions works out so well, he makes her an offer to think over. Meanwhile, Christian winds up with Ethan constantly trying to outdo him.
11 June 2010Christian is delighted by a surprise visit from big brother Aaron, although he won't even show knowing him at the academy. The reason is Aaron always got him into trouble, and this time needs Christian to provide a false alibi, which may compromise Christian's spot in the dorm and hence his parole. Couple exercise problems, especially with lifts, cause fear and trouble among some dance class partners, but switches aren't allowed, nor excuses. Aggravated with her looks, Abigail breaks Tara's special mirror.
14 June 2010Two students stumble on control issues. When cheerful kid sister Paige visits, Abigail strives to domineer their entire time together, but Paige, being 11 years old, will have none of it. Ethan wants to charm and impress Dana, his mentor, so asks Tara to be the principal in a new solo piece of his, whereby he micromanages her into the ground. The only one not having a control issue is Sammy, who happily conducts a sea funeral for his much-despised "girl" shoes.
Season 1, Episode 12: Pressure
15 June 2010It's exam week in both dance and academics, keeping most everybody busy, especially Sam. As Tara nears her first kiss with Ethan, she fears taking on his expert lips without practice, so (at Kat's urging) makes Sammy her kissing-dummy. Meanwhile, ill-tempered Abigail demands that Sammy rehearses their pas-de-deux together every night. It's whom Sammy'd like to be kissing, but signs that Abigail's anorexic diet regimen is catching up with her alarm him.
Season 1, Episode 13: Family
16 June 2010After exams, families arrive for the results and to take their kids home for the holidays. As Christian bonds with Tara's farmer dad over car mechanics, Tara's mother tells her that their sheep farm is in financial trouble, leading Tara to make a surprising decision. While Sam smolders bitterly over his dad not showing up, Kat, expecting a luxury holiday with her pro ballerina mother, Natasha Karamakov, vents during the mother-daughter press interview she's taken to instead.
17 June 2010Before the new semester starts, a nightclub, a park and a senior citizen cha-cha class will see students having some non-artistic dance fun, while someone close starts falling for Tara. Earlier in the day, Anorexic Abigail poses as the perfect patient, but therapist Adam sees through this control-freak's act and insists she seek satisfaction before he lets her participate in ballet classes again. Tara moves in with Kat, which may prove detrimental to their friendship.
18 June 2010A stray dog is sneakily 'adopted' into Kat's room by Petra Hoffman, a talented German exchange student whom Abigail looks upon as her replacement during her therapy. Although the next semester's started, Kat remains in a holiday mood and is seen dating and kissing Lucus in public. Rather then apply pointless punishments, director Kennedy assigns her to assist graduate Gus's program teaching young kids to dance. She gets committed and promises to take them to a TV show, but later looking with the gang for the lost dog makes her late for the kids and dumped. Tara is finally allowed to dance on 'spitzes', but the unexpected pain makes her snippy with Christian while they dance Romeo and Juliet for Ethan's show-reel. (It's that or the unspoken attraction between them that makes Tara's and Christian's dance partnership suddenly difficult for them to bear?)
21 June 2010Kat's parents buy off missing her birthday, so she decides to throw a massive party. She gets drunk worse than unsuspecting foreigner Petra and has to be rescued in the bedroom from slick Lucas by Christian. Tara misses it because her lack of confidence and fear of injuries during scholarship-conditional private tutoring makes the lesson take forever. But worst of all, Abigail discovers a secret to make Tara's life more uncomfortable.
22 June 2010Everyone is punished for Kat's irresponsible party, with poor Sam having to mentor Abigail's make-up English essay. Suspicious of her help refusal, he discovers she clumsily stole a paper from the Internet and makes her write a real one, using cleverly faked jealousy. Patrick takes everyone camping in the outback to rehearse the A Midsummer Night's Dream production. The picture of Tara's kissing infidelity is spread all around, apparently by jealous Kat (but actually by another), causing much havoc. Petra finally forces them to make up by facing the naked facts - in the buff.
23 June 2010Scout re-enters Kat's life when she auditions for the junior summer program at the academy, with Christian helping out. Abigail's meanness shifts off Tara when Petra becomes Miss Raine's clear favorite, but setting her up for a fall proves Petra a stronger and more capable adversary than Abigail expected. Meanwhile, Sammy wants but can't get Abigail to be open about their kisses-in-the-closet love affair.
24 June 2010The Academy welcomes jocks from an all-boys sports school so the pupils can exchange physical training approaches. They actually scold each-other sissies, so when Mr. Patrick orders them to solve it some way, they agree on a double dare: the dancers must score a point against the jocks in an Aussie touch football game; the jocks must perform a cossack dance. Meanwhile, Sammy refuses to keep his affair with Abi secret now that Tara's proved it doesn't harm career prospects, but Abi claims kisses mean nothing. She proves it on an unsuspecting jock's lips, with a kinky twist in his apparent enamoring, while his mate Ollie convinces Kat to coach his clueless team's dance.
25 June 2010The academy's board meeting is to be treated to pupils performances of the highest standard. Even as lover, Sammy still gets no sympathy from Abi although he didn't get a solo part. Christian convinced Tara she's becoming as dance-obsessed as Abi and dares her to prove she can still have fun. Playing all over Sdney, they are late for the performance and run, which ends with Tara making a bad fall. Kat spearheads the juvenile protest against all non-classical dance styles being removed from the program, but wrongly assumed her ma Natasha supported such move.
28 June 2010Ethan is informally promised a spot in the professional troop if his friend Damien 'Damo' Lang's injury is diagnosed incurable, as expected. Tim plans to turn down another offer, expecting he'll get the spot. Childishly whining Tara's fickle lack of confidence and ambition frustrates staff and envious fellow pupils.
29 June 2010Christian's trial is upcoming in a week, but main culprit Aaron, whose confession is vital, has left. Rather then soldier on and secure a recommendation from the academy, Christian calls his case hopeless and plans to enjoy his last week until a juvenile detention. Ethan can't bring himself to sign the 5-year National Ballet contract, which would suspend his choreographic ambitions. Looking for Christian and talking sense into his mate, Sammy misses a picnic with Abigail, who calls that cause for a break-up, and misses the alternative hip-hop class rebel Kat organizes.
30 June 2010Just when Christian despairs about his upcoming trial, Aaron reappears, promising to admit he's the main culprit. Christian should get off with a suspended sentence, but realizing this would mean a long juvenile sentence for his mate Aaron, to whom he feels obliged after being the only one who helped him after his mom's death, Christian intends to take the major blame, hoping for a lenient judge (leaving the staff attorney and Sammy to try talking him out of it). Ethan goes on a picnic with Tara where they find neither of them invited the other - Kat did. Ethan tells everyone he remains in the academy as his Barcelona dream company rejected his choreography project.
Season 1, Episode 24: Heatwave
1 July 2010Sammy enjoys his first-ever close friendship with grateful roommate Christian, but a possible reconciliation with Tara worries him. While all Sidney suffers a heatwave, preparations for the annual public performance must go on. Patrick treats everyone to a pool-class before the auditions. Ethan's famous father, Sebastian Karamakov, comes to direct it. He tells Ethan he shouldn't have refused a professional contract but gives the boy a shot as his personal assistant.
2 July 2010Sammy is so annoyed by his feelings for Christian that he pretends his snob father refuses to accept Christian's summer stay-over. Christian finds out in stages, but only insists not to be dumped as friend and roommate by the only person who ever stuck with him so loyally. Ethan has a hard time as his dad's assistant choreographer, or is it as his glorified gopher? Tara's insecurity and whining cost her the Clara part in The Nutcracker, which understudy Abigail gladly accepts. Kat completely neglects dancing and accepts an Australian tour with rock singer/friend Myles Kelly.
5 July 2010Christian patiently keeps Sammy's secret, hoping for restored best-buddies status while pointing out a hunky outside dancer as a possible gayness test, but Sammy has more pressing worries when his father cancels his Academy fee. Ethan toughs it out as director/father Sebastian's assistant and prevails to save Tara's lead in The Nutcracker. Even Abigail backs off after hiding the legacy dress Tara assumed she needed to shine. Myles makes Kat delay their departure to attend the performance and say goodbye properly.
17 February 2012Chased from his bigot home, Sammy has already worked all summer as dishwasher to save up for the second year at the academy, yet he now denies being gay. He also took the job of dorm monitor supervising the new girls. Christian spent the last part of summer on the Webster ranch, nursing a baby kangaroo with Tara, now his partner. Everyone is excited that Sydney may at last host the Fonteyn cup, the world's most prestigious dance competition. Tara wastes her shot at a solo by failing to rehearse properly under scorned ex Ethan's supervision. Miss Raine's super-talented Royal Ballet-qualified London niece reluctantly joins the academy.
Season 2, Episode 2: Dream Life
18 February 2012Principal Raine not only refuses to reconsider including hip-hop in the Academy's classical program, but even opposes the students learning some in their spare time. Encoraged by Sammy, who still washes dishes, Christian, who trails for all courses at the start of the new term, nevertheless accepts to teach an after hours class on the premises. Career-obsessed Tara meets young test-ever professional graduate Saskia and goes all the way 'networking early', but Christian doesn't want to be dragged along and fate gives her a grim warning. Abbie is her evil old self again, but now with two newbie minions to spy on her new 'rival'. Kat seems unlikely ever to be accepted at her non-artistic new school.
19 February 2012Super-talented Ben Tickle joins straight into the second year and expects to be called the Benster. Socially, however, he's stunningly naive, bluntly outspoken, initially alienates even Sam and Christian, but they soon realize his party invitation is sincere. Kat meanwhile gets one chance to win over her new schoolmates by acting as team choreographer, so she commandeers the Academy gang to train her clueless classmates.
Season 2, Episode 4: Legends
20 February 2012Sammy gets a shot at waitering, but bumbles terribly until he tries doing it musically. Ethan is frustrated being ignored as assistant choreographer, enough to risk that job for a project about frustration, for which he enlist Abby on account of her wicked attitude. Injured diva Saskia starts teaching but allows everyone a day off to prepare a bid for the Fonteyn prize. Tara fails utterly, having ignored Christian's warning ambition must be tempered on account of lack of time.
Season 2, Episode 5: Showcase
21 February 2012The Academy kids divide in groups to perform at the showcase. Benster has a great idea, starring himself and Sammy in a form of Tapdance. Christian's ex Kayla is back and joins his hip-hop act. Sebastian accepted a choreographer job in Berlin, so he'll move overseas. Ethan can keep his Academy job and Kat may move in with him after turning down a 'normal family' suggested by ma Natasha, who plans to retire.
21 February 2012Sammy gets an unsettling visit from his kid brother, bruised by a bully, but after phoning home gets the full story. Since Sam left home, father Ari turned all the pressure on his last-born to become the next doctor Lieberman, and a ballet brother is a reason for ridicule. Benster decides to enjoy life by ditching a whole day on account o doctor's appointment. Hearing Kat got an dance agent's card, he makes her turn up there and for the first audition offered. It's for rugby cheer-leading, she passes the first test but Ethan challenging her motives wrecks her motivation to 'shine' cheerfully.
22 February 2012Sammy asked Benster to come up with a choreography, but he really wants to impress Kat. So Ben devises a flash-mob tap-dance routine. Because of a ferry strike, he must improvise a version inside the Sydney subway. Christian is hurt when Tara, who always 'corrects him, puts them 'on pause' to concentrate on the exams after a scholarship sneer from the principal. She apologizes after Sammy explains Christian was let down by everyone he ever cared for, but really infuriates him by sneakily finding out his absent father's Facebook identity. Grace convinces Abi to break up with Ethan on account of his alleged romantic intentions, but kisses him herself.
22 February 2012It's term exams, notably the pas-de-deux. Sammy flees in his restaurant job, but gets overworked with worrisome marks. Christian is fed-up after his break-up with Tara, but the mates pretend he's sick to cover his absence. Abi, thus without a partner, wings it with Sammy, but makes a pratfall. Only Benster, who sees no reason to practice, shines, Tara is told her overall level is in free fall. Kat fails at math exams, but drags truant Christian along to perform at a children's birthday party.
Season 2, Episode 9: The Break
23 February 2012After the term's last exam, everybody wants to party, but most only shortly, the 'vacation' will be needed to train for the Fonteyn prize, which only Christian opts out from, while he was ironically chosen for an Academy poster. Sammy and Tara got poor marks. Benster shows the mates his cool new tattoo, so Sammy insists and Christian reluctantly agrees they should all get one, until Ben admits his is fake, just to impress Kat.
Season 2, Episode 10: Good Life
22 February 2012After the term exams and party, most pupils buckle down to prepare a Fonteyn prize entry. Sammy however isn't even allowed to join, as he can't pay the entrance fee and isn't eligible for a scholarship while a legal minor. Christian tells Tara she played too hard to get, it's over. Abi is ordered to apologize and resume therapy after other girls' dancing shoes have been ruined, despite her protestation of innocence and accusation toward Grace. Sammy's option to file for emancipation goes on hold when he's called home for grandpa's funeral. The low-key but grim confrontation with father yields an unhoped-for result. Kat's agent has her audition to join the Paris Moulin Rouge, successfully.
22 February 2012Sammy is assigned a big-shot tutor, Oliver, but has a hard time convincing the arrogant guy they both need to deliver. Inviting Ben and Christian to her last training is Kat's first error preparing for the Paris Moulin Rouge, when she fails to abstain for partying all night the contract prospect is canceled. Grace gets Tara to record on camera Saskia's utterly nonconstructive criticism and post it on the Internet, to the principal's fury.
22 February 2012Benster witnesses how vindictive Saskia resorts to physically hurting Tara by forcing her at the barre. Christian volunteers to help her tend to the strains and lend moral support when she seeks outside medical advice, but is kept in the dark when the diagnosis is spine risk. Sammy helps Kat beleaguer the principal until she's given permission to audition, albeit only to repeat year one, while she hoped to rejoin the gang.
Season 2, Episode 13: Backstab
26 February 2012Benster and Christian 'spice' the audition by adding a bet and cocky talk by walkie-talkie. Those accidentally reveal that Christian and Kat, whom he secretly gave a cuddly toy as moral support, aren't quite over each-other. Tara discovers Saskia, who convinced her to dance Red Shoes, really sabotaged Tara out of envy and kisses Ethan before performing his original piece instead. Kat is readmitted despite a dubious audition. Tara ignores medical advice and collapses during her audition as the drugs wear out. Found out having consulted an external doctor, she's expelled.
27 February 2012Benster does a better job than Tara's father, farmer Neil Webster, attempting to get her interested in moving on. Still she soon reneges on her promise to help him with the annual benefit production at the children's hospital where he once was long-term patient himself. Ethan's Academy post isn't prolonged so he considers an offer in Spain. First year students refuse to make friend with Kat, believing she's the seniors' worst schemer and looking up to Abi, while Sammy and Benster avoid Kat since discovering she's not over Christian.
Season 2, Episode 15: Moving On
28 February 2012Actually still unsure about his prospects in Europe, Ethan looks for a job in Sydney. After several failures, Abi's friend Fin instantly wants them after an audition for his musical project, even invites them into his jury. The gang celebrates on a yacht, but after a tough love-push from Abi Ethan decides to leave for Barcelona anyhow. Tara's spinal injury heals well enough to apply for returning to the Academy. She's allowed but refuses until Saskia apologizes, which is refused. Although the gang convinces the principal, she can't prove abuse, but ultimately the gang's hostility convinces Saskia to resign.
Season 2, Episode 16: Origins
29 February 2012An assignment to devise and perform a piece expressing what made them to themselves causes the student to ponder, soul-search and change their minds. Benster first takes Tara's cue by performing how he handle cancer as a child, then decides hating still being treated differently after remission requires his trademark cheerful approach. Sam gets a shot to qualify for the Fonteyn prize in his home state's regional final. He gets tutor Oliver to drive him, but they take offense at different attitudes to outing. Christian came along, allegedly to get a custom-made surfboard from Raf, but as he tells first him, later Sam, that's actually his biological father, who walked out on his late ma and him, which largely defined him.
29 February 2012Hostile acts from the first year, which submits the gang to inverse hazing such as a nightly food fight raid, leads to a hip-hop dance battle dare. The gang appeals to Oliver as coach, but Sammy rather shamelessly exploits the senior's crush on him without reward, not even a bonding party invitation. The newbies have a better party, with jacuzzi. Kat seizes her chance to be a 'real first year', Abi just enjoys coaching the enemy. Grace tempts Tara to abuse her protected status after Saskia by ditching (together) and drinking spiked juice, which bring out Tara's nasty nature.
29 February 2012Teacher Zach commandeers the gang to spend the weekend learning body-control in his wife's circus. Christian happily escapes when biological father Ron arrives in Sidney unannounced, is disappointed again but finds the courage to fight for the prize as Zach's favorite. Sammy insists to face his acrophobia, but can only really deal with his outing-insecurity-caused rift with Oli.
1 March 2012Zach is not amused with natural talent Grace's nonchalance, while she feels ignored, but that changes when he agrees to give her a real challenge in private lessons to his own staggering standard. Striving musical producer Finn wants Abi to star in his dream project 'Review', but she refuses, claiming she's not a singer, however good at it according to Ethan. She gradually changes her mind seeing her inept replacement, jumps in to correct her and ultimately accepts the lead.
1 March 2012A bad cold is going round. Only Christian learns that Ben's uncharacteristic, almost hostile attitude stems from worse: his cancer may be returning. The gang and principal are shocked when a staff e-mail is leaked concerning their Fonteyn prize prospects. Top-rated Grace takes the blame although doubt-marked Abi did it. Being scolded insensitive and un-encouraging, Oli's attempt to sooth Sammy's inferiority complex backfires. Abi's ma and childhood-coach arrives, insisting to overrule Zach's professional instructions. She also drags Abi away from the musical, just now she had converted, announcing the family has to sell their home. Ben and moral support Christian get an excellent diagnosis.
2 March 2012It's the national Fonteyn prize final. Ben and Christian rival in friendly psychological warfare, but get steep competition from Tasmanian Slate and Tara feels the meat in the sandwich, so she sabotages the one chance Ben gives her to become a couple. Sammy hears his pa and kid brother will finally attend and know he has a partner, so to Ollie's horror he asks Abi to play his girlfriend over dinner, which he still ruins. Abi's mother excessive meddling drives her back to Finn's musical, bowing out of the final. Despite sabotage from Slade, Sammy triumphs.
3 March 2012After the national final, the non-winners must concentrate on the end of year performance auditions, now for Peter Pan. Christian blames Zach for giving him 'false hope' but is told he didn't go all the way. He seeks comfort in a motorbike lesson, but takes crazy risks and injures a leg. Jealousy makes Sammy and Oli break up again. Manipulative Grace expects Tara to lie 'witnessing' Zach supposedly stole a kiss from her, while it was the other way around, but is found out and shipped back to London.
4 March 2012The Peter Pan leads go to timely recovered Christian, Ben, Kat and Abi. Ben spares no effort to win Tara, ultimately overcoming her insecure claim he's just chasing what he can't have any more. Fin convinces Abi she should have a life beside show-business, so she accepts a date in an aquarium and calls 'markers' on Sammy to coach her, amazed by his general knowledge. In her absence, supposedly sick, Tara can train for her part.
5 March 2012Sammy decides to dedicate his Fonteyn prize modern piece to ballet friendship, so brilliantly even Abi applauds. Ben now coaches Tara. Christian is persuaded by Kat the declare his feelings in case she wins and transfers to Moscow. Grace arrives, surprisingly on the British team, taunting Tara who makes a fool of herself reporting what turns out another fib. The gang is crushed when Christian is told Sammy was killed in a car accident, just before his great day.
Season 2, Episode 25: The Second
6 March 2012Memories of quaint, cute, smart Sammy abound during and after his funeral. Oli holds the eulogy, but his cardigan is denied as keepsake by Christian, who blames his blunt break-up while feeling somehow guilty he might have prevented Sammy's death if he accepted jogging together. Ben gratefully accepts to take over a Fonteyn prize participant, despite 'disrepect' cries from Tara, who even intends bowing out herself from the competition, which is delayed for a week. Even Ethan returns to partake in the gang's own, beach memorial, which Kate plants meticulously. Abi seems unmoved, even auditions immediately with Rafael Bonachela's company, but breaks down at the first rehearsal.
7 March 2012Christian celebrates his 18th birthday, receives a biker suit from the gang and is invited to join father Raf on a Tasmanian road-trip during the summer holiday. Ben steps in for Sammy as Fonteyn contestant, but instead of a personal showpiece performs the ode to dancers friendship Sammy created, inviting the whole gang on stage. Grace taunts Tara, who is coaches by Abi, who pushes her to perform another version of Red Shoes, which calls for expression of girlish emotions and real grief.
