Three Summers review – Ben Elton's folk music festival comedy misses a few notes

14 August 2017 7:42 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

A roll call of Australian talent fills out this slight and sunny love story but while the jokes arrive at a steady pace, more than a few fall short of their mark

If a Western Australian folk music festival seems like a left-field setting for a film by Ben Elton – once a premier humorist of Britain’s grimy absurdities in shows including The Young Ones and Blackadder – bear in mind that the comedian has held dual citizenship in Australia since 2004, taking up residence in Fremantle with his Australian wife.

A slight and sunny love story, Three Summers is set over three consecutive iterations of the fictional Westifal music festival (slogan: “Let’s get folked up”). MisfitsRobert Sheehan and Home and Away’s Rebecca Breeds star as the prospective partners. She’s a boot-stamping, fiddle-playing folk chick; he’s a know-it-all muso with a passion for the theremin. Inumans: Iwan Rheon Talks How Maximus And Game Of Thrones' Ramsay Are Different.

9 August 2017 12:17 PM, PDT | LRMonline.com | See recent LRM Online news »

I first remember Iwan Rheon when he portrayed the meek and very socially reserved character of Simon Bellamy on the British show, Misfits. His turn as the psychotic Ramsay Bolton on HBO’s Game of Thrones was a complete 180 from his Misfits character, and is a testament to Rheon’s acting range.  Rheon is now set to be a part of Marvel’s Inhumans, playing Maximus, a powerless character intent on overthrowing his Inhuman brother, Black Bolt. Rheon recently sat down with Moviefone and talked about what it’s like to join the Marvel Universe and how Maximus is different from Ramsay Bolton:

"I think every young boy wants to be in the superhero show, so it's lovely to join it. Even though I don't actually have a superpower in the show, it's cool just to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe -- they make such amazing stuff and »

The Best Underdog Networks and Streaming Services You Should Be Watching — IndieWire Critics Survey

8 August 2017 9:34 AM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)

This week’s question: Which lesser known network or streaming service deserves more love? Why?

I just wrote about this for TVInsider.com! Recently, I am obsessed with truTV, which has unleashed two of my favorite summer programs: “The Chris Gethard Show” and Andrea Savage’s perfect “I’m Sorry.” The first is the “Pee Wee’s Playhouse” of live late-night talk shows featuring the supremely likable comedian and the second, sort of a “Curb Your Enthusiasm” for suburban marrieds, Finally gives Savage a chance to carry a show after years of scene-stealing support. A Sneak Peek At New ABC Show ‘Marvel’s Inhumans’

4 August 2017 8:24 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

The multimedia juggernaut, also known as Marvel, has been dominating multiplexes for well over a decade now. The small screen however, is a slightly different story. While Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has survived four years on network television (with a fifth on the way), the show has also suffered from poor reviews, and steadily declining ratings since its debut.

Netflix has had a slightly more successful run of Marvel adaptations with the critically acclaimed Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage. But, this year’s Iron Fist was plagued with negativity surrounding its controversial casting, and weak storytelling. Regardless, ABC have their sights set on another piece of the ever-lucrative Marvel pie with the upcoming Inhumans.

The series initially began as a feature film adaptation from Marvel Studios, before an extremely public breakup between Kevin Feige and Ike Perlmutter derailed the project. Now, this 8 episode television event promises to combine the epic storytelling of Game of Thrones, »

Fantasia Review: ‘S.U.M.1’ is a High Concept, Low Budget One-Man Sci-Fi Show

31 July 2017 5:34 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

It’s been decades since a new world order changed Earth forever, an alien invasion by creatures known as the Nonesuch forcing humanity underground. The old guard who survived remembers the war that drove them subterranean, memories of life on the surface and the beasts that present-day generations hope to never encounter. If any of them do want to risk their lives for a glimpse of the sun they’ve only heard about through stories, though, they can enlist in the military and become a soldier tasked with a one hundred day mission meant to find stragglers and point them towards sanctuary: Exilium. Battles still rage, but humanity has all but resigned itself to its defeat. Now it’s a matter of staying alive to save those who were left behind.

This is the background to Christian Pasquariello’s debut feature S.U.M.1 — a high concept, low budget one-man science fiction show. »

Michael Alago, Who Signed Metallica and White Zombie, Gets the Documentary Treatment in ‘Who the F**k Is That Guy?’

21 July 2017 6:38 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

If the histories of Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre warrant four hours of prime HBO real estate in “The Defiant Ones,” then certainly Michael Alago, the flamboyant New York punk habitue who signed Metallica to Elektra and White Zombie to Geffen during his stints as an A&R executive, deserves his 77 minutes of recognition.

In the spirit of similar documentaries on behind-the-scenes heroes such as Rodney Bingenheimer (“The Mayor of Sunset Strip”) and Danny Fields (“Danny Says”), “Who the F**k Is That Guy?” recounts the remarkable journey of Alago, a Puerto Rican kid who grew up on Brooklyn’s New Utrecht Avenue with his bedroom facing an elevated subway track. That undoubtedly influenced his passion for post-punk hardcore rock. “I love the noise,” he says at one point in the movie. “I love the sweat.  I love when I go to concerts and it’s 99% guys.”

The documentary was directed by punk-rock veteran Drew Stone, who »

The Flickering Myth Reaction to the first trailer for Marvel’s Inhumans

The Flickering Myth team react to the first trailer for Marvel’s Inhumans

Marvel’s Inhumans series dropped its first trailer yesterday [watch it here] and the online reaction has been overwhelmingly negative.  What did the Flickering Myth staff think of this first look?  Read on to see how much our writers matched up with public opinion…

Shaun Munro: Scott Buck’s the showrunner, so of course this looks and plays incredibly flat. It did almost nothing for me, unfortunately. I imagine the IMAX treatment will just enhance how cheap it all looks.

Tai Freligh: I know nothing about the Inhumans at all, so I went into this trailer with no preconceptions. It looks somewhat interesting, but I’m not sure I can handle another show where Iwan Rheon plays a Ramsay Bolton type of character. If so, I’d be rooting for him to get killed off right away as I can’t handle more of that. »
