Every once in a while Are You Here strikes comedic gold.
63
“Mad Men” creator Matthew Weiner takes his act to the big screen with Are You Here, which turns out to be the most quotable Owen Wilson comedy since “Zoolander.”
63
The problem with all of this is that Are You Here is less than two hours long and, to effectively explore issues and themes of this magnitude would require at least a full season of a TV series. So we're left with half-developed characters and quickly sketched relationships.
42
In Mad Men mastermind Matthew Weiner's big-screen directorial debut, the aggressively unfunny Are You Here, all of the dark humor and delicate character shadings we're used to seeing on his TV series are conspicuously absent. He's swapped nuance for blunt-edged numskullery.
42
Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner makes a troublesome filmmaking debut, wasting a dream cast for a comedy in a fitful story of family tension, mental illness and corrosive self-absorption.
40
Weiner might have a great movie in him yet, but Are You Here suggests his true talent lies elsewhere.
40
One dead giveaway that the comedy isn't working is the film's score, which overcompensates throughout by attempting to bolster every second with bouncy energy.
40
You Are Here ultimately suffers from a problem of tone. It wants to be a stoner bromance, a pastoral romcom and an incisive drama about mental illness.
38
The two main characters in Are You Here spend much of their time stoned or weeping. Those who watch this dreadful film may seek to escape or sink into despair as well.
38
If Matthew Weiner's Are You Here is good for anything, it's to illustrate how the themes and conflicts he has worked out with such depth and dexterity in all these seasons of "Mad Men" can go terribly amiss with the wrong actors, wrong backdrop, wrong tone, wrong time.
38
A comedy with no laughs. A drama disconnected from any known reality. It's tempting to diagnose Are You Here with schizophrenic genre disorder.
30
This tonal mess rarely puts a foot right as comedy and makes only marginal improvements when it turns poignant toward the end.
25
As it stands, there's little to explain the existence of this confoundingly unfunny film. It's as if a talented cast (Wilson, Zach Galifianakis, Amy Poehler) assembled to make a comedy and at the last minute was told to play everything straight.
25
Everything about Are You Here feels like a bottom-drawer script idea that was put together too casually and carelessly.
25
You Are Here is a shockingly inept comedy.
20
Writer-director Matthew Weiner, creator of the magnificent Mad Men, has made a feature film - theoretically a comedy - that's just shy of terrible.
20
The compelling Draper's the creation of “Mad Men” mastermind Matthew Weiner, the writer-director of Are You Here. Which begs the question: how could Weiner make, as his debut comedy, a movie as amateurish and off-putting as this one?
12
The female characters on Mad Men are probably the show's strongest asset, but here they're hollow to the point of insult.
