Knights of Badassdom -- KNIGHTS OF BADASSDOM follows three best friends (Peter Dinklage, Steve Zahn and Ryan Kwanten) and dedicated LARPers (Live Action Role Players) as they take to the woods to reenact a dungeons and dragons-like scenario fresh out of the mythical Middle Ages. Trouble arises after they unwittingly conjure up some serious evil in the form of a blood-lusting Succubus, from the pits of hell.
Fantasy and reality collide on the Fields of Evermore in an all-out epic battle of make-believe wizards, demons and assorted mythical creatures. Their courage and friendship is put to the test as they attempt to vanquish the evil they have summoned. Will the group prove to simply be foam sword-wielding LARPers, or true “Knights of Badassdom?”

Gah! Wanted it to be great, but alas not, fun enough., 7 March 2014
Author: jonnytheshirt from United Kingdom

With a cast of very recognisable faces as well as a trailer with Peter Dinklage promising " There be pummelling to be done..". (Was there? I swore there was, but I did not see that happen in the movie.), I was expecting more from this Larper/gamer dromedy fantasy horror mash up. What we received instead was a trope of utter stereotypes pulled off with absolutely no inside thought on the genres they were touching nor finesse of humour to accomplish the ridiculousness they aspired to. Lets face it Ryan Kwanten does not look like a Doom Metal singer. As a former gamer who gets the humour Unicorn City, Role Models and Gamers: The Dorkness Rising pulled off this genre much better. Even Zero Charisma had more narrative effect.

However even though it got confused in taking itself too seriously at times Knights went for the jugular of hammy effects and hammy ideas - it just didn't meld it together well. You'll appreciate this movie for what it is and if you think gamers are dorks stay well away, years from now aliens will watch this movie and understand why the human race wiped itself out. You're probably wondering why I even give it a 5. Well it still was enjoyable tosh with Jimi Simpson (House of Cards) giving gung ho as the Gamesmaster and Dinkelage on point as usual but with no where near enough screen time, Kwanton did also admirably do the best with what he had and Summer Glau was watchable. I can think of many worse movies however this is most certainly in a niche class, I probably would have loved it a lot more had I seen it when I was 14. In this kind of movie I think the target audience expected legendary quotes to remember, unfortunately there were not - except one which I may have made up myself - "There be pommelling to be done!".
