Top 5: Heist Movies

With both The Hatton Garden Job in UK cinemas now, and We Still Steal the Old Way available on DVD from today, I thought i’d take a look at my favourite Top Five Heist/Crime Caper Movies… In order (for a change) they are:

5) In Security

In Security tells the story of best friends Kevin and Bruce, who are co-owners of a failing home security company in a town with no crime. As a last ditch effort to drum up some business, they start robbing the neighbors to instill fear and create a need for their services but bullets fly when they unwittingly rob the wrong guy – a suburban drug lord with a penchant for kitchen gadgets.

It’s fair to say I love a good goofball crime caper, but In Security however has much more than being just a “crime caper” going for it. For one it stars one of my favourite actors,

Rob Minkoff interview: Mr Peabody & Sherman, Roger Rabbit 2

Interview Simon Brew 7 Feb 2014 - 07:17

Simon talks to the director of Mr Peabody & Sherman about child actors, straight to video sequels, and animation vs live action

Since he co-directed The Lion King, Rob Minkoff hasn't made a full-on animated film since. He mixed animation with live action in a pair of Stuart Little movies (setting off a bit of a trend there), and went on to tackle The Haunted Mansion, The Forbidden Kingdom, and Flypaper amongst others.

Mr Peabody & Sherman brings him back to animation though, and he spared us some time to chat about. What's more, he talked too about the time he was offered the director's chair on Who Framed Roger Rabbit 2. Here's how our chat went...

If I've got this right, then this one's been on your plate for a decade, if not more than that. At one stage it was said to have a live action element to it.

’21 and Over’ Trailer: Wild Celebration of Drinking Age

Coming off their mega-hit The Hangover, the writing team of Jon Lucas and Scott Moore has gone to pen the scripts for Flypaper and The Change-Up to moderately successful results. With the recent release of the trailer for their new film 21 and Over, which they are also directing, it appears the duo is going back to their roots with a premise about an epic 21st birthday party that, of course, goes dangerously but hilariously over the edge.

The film centers on young Jeff Chang, a straight-a college student preparing for a medical school interview and his two extroverted fun-seeking best friends, Miller and Casey. As you would imagine, Miller and Casey convince Jeff to go out for his 21st birthday party and attempt to break him out of his shell, risking missing his interview in the process. Substitute a twenty-one-year-old ...

[First Look] Concept Art from Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Pinocchio’; Early Poster for DreamWorks’ ‘Mr. Peabody and Sherman’

The EW article alleges that Guillermo del Toro won’t shoot his stop-motion Pinocchio for another year, but Lord knows an early state won’t prevent the poring over of concept art. One can look at and read what’s posted right above, which is both Geppetto’s construction of Pinocchio and the latter’s plunge with “one of puppet-theater owner Mangiafoco’s monkeys.” It doesn’t offer a world of impressions, but yours truly takes it as an initial sign of what’s to come; a good sign it is.

del Toro will co-direct Pinocchio with Mark Gustafson (Fantastic Mr. Fox), both of whom may be working with Daniel Radcliffe, Christopher Walken, and Tom Waits, should everyone be getting their way. If we, the collective audience, get our own way, this combination of auteur and material is bound to yield some stunning results. A well-worn tale though it may be,

Exclusive: Clip From The Psychological & Supernatural Thriller 'Warhouse'

The Cannes Film Festival kicks off on Wednesday, but even outside of films In Competition, as part of the Un Certain Regard section or in the Cannes Directors' Fortnight and Critics' Week sidebars, the field will also be extremely crowded in Cannes Market, where studios and producers come to hawk their wares to buyers. Double Dutch Media is one such company and they have a diverse slate of nine films unspooling in the marketplace this year. One of the more intriguing offerings is "Warhouse," a brutal psychological (and supernatural) thriller about one man's fight to preserve his humanity and sanity over years of terrible imprisonment.

The film is led by Joseph Morgan (Klaus Mikaelson on CW's "The Vampire Diaries," "Immortals") along with Matt Ryan ("Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior," "Flypaper") and William Troughton and is directed by newcomer Luke Massey. Here's the official synopsis and below, an exclusive clip from the

Blu-ray Review: ‘Flypaper’ Falters With Paper-Thin Characterizations

Chicago – After the not-so-surprising success of the heavily marketed farce “The Hangover,” Jon Lucas and Scott Moore have quickly become Hollywood’s most overrated screenwriters. They specialize in injecting high concepts with frat-boy vulgarity, mean spirited gags and entirely superficial warmth. If Zach Galifianakis hadn’t bolstered “Hangover” with his deadpan genius, the film almost surely would’ve flopped.

Yet while Lucas and Moore borrowed familiar formulas for underwhelming duds like “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past” and “The Change-Up,” their “Hangover” admittedly benefited from a clever structure. It allowed moviegoers to join the characters in piecing together the wacky events that occurred during an inebriated night that unfolded offscreen. The writing duo’s very next project was the barely released indie “Flypaper,” which is to “Hangover” what “I Know What You Did Last Summer” was to “Scream.”

Blu-ray Rating: 1.5/5.0

This time, Lucas and Moore work within the standard heist genre, while

2011 Gold Coast Film Festival Preview

There’s a decidedly oriental tinge to this year’s Gold Coast Film Festival. Jiang Wen’s extremely successful rice-noodle Chinese comedy western Let The Bullets Fly (which had its premiere at the Brisbane International Film Festival – read my review Here) has been chosen as the opening night film and there’s a ‘Cool Japan’ line-up which features the Australian premieres of Makoto Shinkai‘s (Voice of a Distant Star) exquisitely rendered anime Children Who Chase Lost Voices From Deep Below - a nostalgic and mystical adventure concerning family loss which firmly places the young director in a league with the laudable likes of manga masters Katsuhiro Ohtomo, Mamoru Oshii and Hayao Miyazaki. On the non-animated front we have the welcome return screenings of Anh Hung Tran‘s Sydney Film festival favourite Norweigan Wood and Takashi Miike‘s kinetic Seven Samurai throwback 13 Assassins. Two further manic manga adaptations, Shinsuke Sato

New this Week: ‘Happy Feet Two,’ ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1′ and ‘Evil Dead 2: 25th Anniversary Edition (Bd)’

Hitting movie theaters this weekend:

Happy Feet Two - Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Pink

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 - Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner

Movie of the Week

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1

The Stars: Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner

The Plot: The Quileute and the Volturi close in on expecting parents Edward and Bella, whose unborn child poses different threats to the wolf pack and vampire coven.

The Buzz: The only drawback to having to choose a movie of the week becomes apparent on weeks such as this one, wherein I have absolutely zero interest in any of the new releases. First of all, I hated what I saw of the first Happy Feet, and the trailer for Happy Feet Two advertises a film which looks to be about as bearable as swallowing a glass full of shards of glass. And so, the
