7 Most Mind-Numbingly Generic Things About The First 'Ouija' Trailer

16 July 2014 3:41 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Is the new "Ouija" trailer feeling a little...familiar? Formulaic? Uninspired? I hear you. This movie looks like it was cobbled together by a focus group specializing in "What Millenials Want! Lolz Omg Facebook Sexxxting!" To demonstrate what I mean, below are seven of the most heinous cliches from the new spot (embedded above). 1. Actors who look at least five years too old to be in high school Where have we seen this before? Hmm, try every teenage horror movie ever made. Actually, lead actress Olivia "Final Girl" Cooke is only 20 years old, but the majority of her "classmates" look like they should get arrested for being within 30 feet of a locker. 2. Out-of-touch suburban setting As someone who actually grew up in the hinterlands, I feel qualified to say this: not everyone in suburbia lives in a fabulous three-story Victorian mini-mansion. 3. Wise old psychic woman I actually thought co-star Vivis Colombetti »

Updated: Billboards for The Strain Are Freaking People Out - Including a Paranormal Activity Actor!

28 June 2014 8:00 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

What a bunch of babies! Apparently billboards for FX's upcoming "The Strain" featuring some kind of a worm either coming out of, or going into, an eyeball are too much for residents of Hollywood to handle, and they've taken to Twitter to bitch about it.

Okay, so maybe you don't necessarily want to see a close-up of a worm-penetrated eyeball while you're trying to choke down your Egg McMuffin in the morning, but is it really that big of a deal? Well, people need something to tweet about. It can't all be pictures of food and cute cat videos.

And we've heard from some celebs on the Twittersphere regarding "The Strain" billboards. Paranormal Activity 2 star Molly Ephraim herself has spoken out. Ephraim tweeted, "Billboard for ‘The Strain’ or whatever that godforsaken thing is w/ the thing in the eyeball on my street; can I call the Mayor to complain? »

Akiva Goldsman Set to Direct Horror Film Stephanie

26 June 2014 9:30 AM, PDT | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Screenwriter and director Akiva Goldsman is about to take on a new film project called Stephanie. This will be a horror movie that tells the story of a little girl with "unworldly abilities who was abandoned before a man and a woman show up claiming to be her parents, thereby interrupting her mysterious world."

The last film that Goldsman directed was Winter's Tale, which is a film I haven't seen. It didn't really look that good to me to be honest. But Goldsman is a talented, Academy Award winning screenwriter who has written some pretty incredible scripts in his career. Some of those include A Beautiful Mind; Cinderella Man; I, Robot; The Da Vinci Code; and for some reason he also wrote Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. Can't win 'em all, I guess.

Goldsman isn't new to the world of horror as he was the executive producer on Paranormal Activity 2, »

Akiva Goldsman Will Direct Blumhouse Horror Pic Stephanie

25 June 2014 9:18 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Though his feature directorial debut, Winter’s Tale, was an unqualified disaster on absolutely every level, Oscar winner Akiva Goldsman (for his script for A Beautiful Mind, which also won Best Picture) isn’t giving up the director’s chair just yet. This week, he signed on to helm a horror flick called Stephanie, for Blumhouse, Unbroken and The Gotham Group.

The film will tell the story of a “little girl with unworldly abilities who was abandoned before a man and a woman show up claiming to be her parents, thereby interrupting her mysterious world.”

Though that description doesn’t really give much insight into what Stephanie is actually about, we have reason to be hopeful. Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski’s script was noted as one of the best in The Blood List (like the Black List of most liked but un-produced screenplays, only for horror) a few years back. »

New Release Dates for ‘Paranormal Activity’ & ‘Bourne’ Pentaquels

18 June 2014 11:16 PM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Both the Paranormal Activity series and the Bourne franchise will be unloading their fifth instalments in the near future, but first we have some release dates to shuffle around. First up is the confusingly titled Paranormal Activity 5, as it is actually the 7th film in the franchise when you consider Parnormal Activity 2 has an alternative Japanese version known as Paranormal Activity 2: Tokyo Night and earlier this year we saw the release of spin-off Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones. Fans of the found-footage franchise may be disappointed to hear that the series will be taking a break until 2016. Paramount Pictures revealed the news at CineEurope where they also announced a 2016 release for Transformers 5, G.I. Joe 3, Star Trek 3, and Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 2. Paramount Pictures will also be rebooting Beverly Hills Cop that year and giving us Timur Bekmambetov’s Ben Hur remake.

The HeyUGuys Interview: Christopher Landon on Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones

13 May 2014 5:00 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

To mark the home entertainment release of Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, HeyUGuys had the pleasure to speak with Christopher Landon, the writer-director of this latest instalment and veteran scribe of Paranormal Activity. Our discussion became a chronological journey from childhood encounters with Aliens and wandering the forbidden section of the video store, to the director’s chair of The Marked Ones.

Why a career in filmmaking? Was there that one inspirational moment?

It was probably when one of my sisters took me to see Aliens in the movie theatre and during that classic scene where Ripley screams “Get away from her you bitch!” the audience stood up out of their seats screaming and cheering. It was that moment where I thought I want to make people do that; I want to make movies. So that was a defining moment for me.

Can you remember the moment you discovered the horror genre? »

The Blood Stream: 7 Nights of Darkness

12 May 2014 8:00 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

The Blood Stream mines the Internet for horror gold so you don’t have to, delivering streamable horror titles never before featured on Dread Central. Occasionally I’ll dredge up something good, maybe even great. To find those gems, I’ll have to sift through a lot of breathtakingly bad cinema. Enjoy!

Lame title notwithstanding, 7 Nights of Darkness is a totally enjoyable found footage horror movie I’d never heard of before. If you’ve got nothing to watch and you’re even remotely fond of paranormal investigations, you should totally check it out.<7nights2.png>

The film is presented as cobbled-together footage from an unaired reality TV competition. Title cards explain that six strangers were sent into a spooky old building called The Madison Seminary with video cameras, sleeping bags and a list of tasks to complete. At the end of seven nights, whoever hadn’t run off in terror would split a million dollar prize. »

Film Review: ‘Oculus’ Succeeds Psychologically, Fails Supernaturally

12 April 2014 2:49 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Films in general are knocked for being knockoffs of something else. Horror films in particular have it especially hard in the “new” department because we’re so quickly annoyed when we’ve “seen it all before”.

There are only so many ways to alter how you draw a circle. At the end of the day, you’ve still drawn a circle and the only difference is how you got there.

Rating: 3.0/5.0

Oculus” starts with promise because Jason Blum is attached to it. Blum’s production company, Blumhouse Productions, is responsible for so many Hollywood horror films as of late that it’s impossible for your concept of horror in the past decade not to be impacted by him.

Just to name a few, we’re talking about “Paranormal Activity” (2007), “Paranormal Activity 2” (2010),” “Paranormal Activity 3” (2011), “Sinister” (2012), “Paranormal Activity 4” (2012), “The Purge” (2013)”, “Insidious: Chapter 2” (2013), “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones »

AMC Developing Walking Dead Companion Show, New Chris Carter Area 51 Series, Plus Pilots Involving Exorcism, the Occult, and More!

26 March 2014 5:30 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

TV's 2014 Upfront presentations are currently under way, and while the horror news has been light so far, today it was AMC's turn, and they have several projects in development that caught our eye.

First, the thus far untitled "The Walking Dead" companion series has landed Dave Erickson ("Sons of Anarchy") as an executive producer and co-writer along with Robert Kirkman.

As Kirkman said previously, "After ten years of writing the comic book series... I couldn’t be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of 'The Walking Dead' universe. The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing."

Now, as for the rest, along with "The After," which is heading to Amazon, Chris Carter has "Area 51" in the works at AMC. Written by Carter and »

The Following season 2 episode 8 review: The Messenger

12 March 2014 12:10 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Review Ron Hogan 12 Mar 2014 - 07:01

The Following has truly embraced its craziness and is all the better for it. Here's Ron's review of The Messenger...

This review contains spoilers.

2.8 The Messenger

I was a little cool on The Following in its first season. Sure, it was violent, but for whatever reason, I never really liked it all that well. It definitely had a strong performance from Kevin Bacon, but there seemed to be some issues with the show that kept me from embracing it completely. All that has changed in the second season. The Following has dropped any pretence at seriousness and has decided to go completely off the rails. The twists are twistier, the kills are more disturbing, the black comedy is as black as Ryan Hardy's morning coffee, and the show is worlds better for embracing craziness dropping most of its pretence at seriousness.
