The cop crime thriller The Son of No One boasts a helluva cast, including such actors as Channing Tatum (The Eagle), Juliette Binoche (Chocolat), Tracy Morgan (TV’s 30 Rock) , Katie Holmes (TV’s The Kennedys) and Ray Liotta (Something Wild). Oh, and a guy named Al Pacino (Carlito’s Way).

If the indie film fan closest to you was squealing with delight yesterday afternoon you've probably already noticed that the 2012 Sundance Film Festival lineup has been announced, bringing with it the promise of a lot of buzz and glitzy celebration in the high mountains of Park City, Utah next January. I'll be on the ground there for my third Sundance, and I'm looking forward as much as anyone to what's in the store, both seeing some of the indie titles that will rock the film world for the rest of the year (your Martha Marcy May Marlenes and Winter's Bone's, you might say) and also plenty of duds that everyone will pretty much ignore once they finally limp into theaters (The Son of No One). It's always easy in hindsight to predict which Sundance titles were never going to find an audience. But when you're picking out tickets and »

For a movie that has garnered little to no fanfare, and one that you probably shouldn’t even bother watching, “The Son of No One” has a lot of names that you’ll recognize. You’ve got Channing Tatum in the lead; Katie Holmes as his wife; Al Pacino as, you’ll never guess this, a New York cop; Ray Liotta as, you’ll never guess this either, a corrupt New York cop; and Tracy Morgan in a role that is what I imagine is similar to the part his character from “30 Rock” played when he went after an Oscar. And Juliette Binoche shows up as a crusading journalist, forgot to mention that one. This is the third time Tatum has teamed up with director Dito Montiel—first in “The Guide to Recognizing Your Saints” then in “Fighting”—but the real star of “The Son of No One” is Tatum’s mustache. »

The Son of No One, stars Channing Tatum, Tracy Morgan, Katie Holmes, Ray Liotta and Juliette Binoche. It’s not a cast I would ever think to see on one screen, but then again, I’m not Dito Montiel. This is
Dito’s third feature film showing the human and at times devastating side of urban life. This time he takes us into the world of Milk, a boy that does something terrible, and a man that cannot shake the consequences. I talked to Dito about his unconventional path to filmmaking and his indie approach to life.
The Son of No One is based on a novel you wrote?
Well I wrote 1/2 of it. It’s called The Story of Milk, and then I jumped into this. I was the kid that did book reports on movies, not books, so this made sense. But now it is a book. »

Adam Sandler and Katie Holmes teamed up in La last night for the premiere of Jack and Jill. His wife Jackie Titone posed for photos on the red carpet, though Katie's spouse, Tom Cruise, wasn't able to attend due to his work commitments in Pennsylvania for One Shot. Katie was decked out in a two-toned dress from her Holmes & Yang line, pairing the frock with shoes from Lanvin. The screening was the final event in a weekend of togetherness for Katie and Adam. They were busy with junket interviews over the last few days - stay tuned for those on PopSugar soon! The comedy, which is out on Nov. 11, marks Katie's return to the big screen after August's Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, and she also has The Son of No One out Nov. 4. Katie's done time on TV recently as well, having starred as "The Slutty Pumpkin" on How I Met Your Mother. »

The cat is all right. In a surprise victory, DreamWorks Animation’s Puss in Boots led the box office for the second weekend in a row, grossing an estimated $33 million. That result nearly matched the movie’s $34.1 million debut last week, meaning that Puss dropped only 3 percent — the smallest second-weekend decline of any wide release this year. Families flocked to the PG-rated film on Saturday, resulting in a gargantuan Friday-to-Saturday increase of 94 percent. Clearly parents are hungry for entertainment options that the whole family can enjoy.
Puss’ incredible hold is also the result of its soft opening last week, which »

My review of The Son of No One.
Benny Gammerman: I've been following your film career since before A Guide to Recognize Your Saints came out. You did a Q&A at Nyu while you were still cutting it and I was in the audience.
Dito Montiel: I remember that, because the guy who set it up was helping me cast. Was I with my editor? Did we show the movie? I tell you how I remember it now: We had the old ending where it goes to black.
Bg: That's right, and you teased because you said, “I can't tell you who it's going to be, but it's going to be a really great actor...”
Dm: Oh, that's funny. That was because... oh, the wars I had about that. For whatever reason, somebody at that company hated Eric Roberts. Not his performance, just him. I said, “Are you kidding me? »

Chicago – Director Dito Montiel and star Channing Tatum were once tagged with the label of the hot new debut artistic partnership. 2006’s great “A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints” introduced both men to the world and it felt like it could be the calling card for a creative team to someday rival Scorsese & De Niro. Tatum reunited with Montiel on the disappointing “Fighting” and their latest venture, “The Son of No One,” while an improvement on Montiel’s sophomore slump, is nonetheless another misfire.
Of course, many readers will recognize Tatum from his more mainstream fare like “The Dilemma” and “G.I. Joe,” but he had such a instant screen presence in “Saints” that I always hoped he’d find his way to more gritty indie fare like “The Son of No One,” based on Montiel’s book. This is a challenging piece, a drama about hidden pasts and »

Summary: A gritty, grimey cop thriller with more merits than flaws.
I recall attending a Q&A with Dito Montiel in 2006 during my sophomore year at Nyu. Back then, he was but a budding writer/director whose first feature had secured some dynamite names. A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints -- a drama about growing up in Astoria in the '80s -- boasts raw performances from Dianne Wiest, Shia Labeouf, Chazz Palminteri, and most surprisingly of all, Channing Tatum, whose portrayal of street kid Antonio burns with volatility and self-loathing. Montiel must have liked what he saw, for ever since, he's been in the Tatum business. I didn't get the chance to see his follow-up Fighting, which stars Tatum as a young underground street fighter, but it got good reviews and did decent business. That brings us to The Son of No One, Montiel's third film and third collaboration with good old Chay Tates. »

The suspense drama The Son of No One is writer/director Dito Montiel’s third collaboration with actor Channing Tatum. Often drawing on his own experiences and the environment in which he spent his childhood and teen years, this latest film is no exception, with many of his characters composites of people from his past and his experiences living in the Queens Housing Projects. During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, Dito Montiel talked about how the story was inspired by a real-life drug addict who was killed in the apartment he lived in growing up, that there were only minor changes made to the ending after the film screened at Sundance, why it was important to him to make sure these characters were not entirely good or entirely bad, how surreal it was to direct Al Pacino and Ray Liotta in scenes together, and how he hopes to do a funnier film next. »

The holiday movie season is kicking in to gear this week with one of the most unlikely Christmas movies to date: A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas. While the stoner comedy will be looking to improve on the box office numbers from the first two Harold and Kumar films (thanks in part to higher 3D ticket prices), it's going to have a tough time going up against the defending champ Puss in Boots plus Brett Ratner's Tower Heist starring Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy. There isn't much else in terms of new releases this week other than those two flicks, however, with crime thriller The Son of No One starring Channing Tatum and Al Pacino being the only noteworthy entry in limited release. What will you be watching this weekend and what are your box office predictions? Tower Heist A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas The Son of No One »

Sometimes there are one or two or three things in a movie that seem wholly implausible: For example, characters who, in 2011, don't use or even appear to own cell phones. Depending on the movie -- and the necessity of cell phones to the story -- you might find that one little glitch unforgivable or you might look the other way. But what if a movie has so many glitches, so many careless oversights, that looking the other way only brings on whiplash? The characters in Dito Montiel's The Son of No One use cell phones, all right. But almost nothing else in the movie makes sense. It's as if Montiel, who also wrote the script, came up with a cool idea and then had no idea how to spin it out into an even minimally plausible story. »
