Scary houses: watching the cheap horror hiding in Tesco

  • Den of Geek
Spotted those shiny boxed horror movies in your local Tesco? Craig's watched them. All of them.

There's a certain type of horror film fan who enjoys a challenge. Perhaps they like a sense of adventure with their films. Perhaps there's also an element of gambling. It starts small. Low odds. For example, they might buy a boxset of the Alien Quadrilogy. Four seemingly reasonable films but there's an element of both chance and endurance. Can you sit through nearly eight hours of Alien films? And, if you can, how many of them will you like? Eventually not only does the thrill become harder to chase as the product's effect gets weaker (anyone who's bought Hellraiser boxsets will know the rules of diminishing returns) but there are only a finite number of franchises in the world and the hardened need to find new, strange ways of getting their kicks.

So bear with me.

‘The Bleeding House’ Review

Stars: Alexandra Chando, Nina Lisandrello, Patrick Breen, Richard Bekins, Betsy Aidem, Charlie Hewson, Court Young, Henderson Wade, Victoria Dalpe | Written and Directed by Philip Gelatt

The Bleeding House is a mystery horror movie directed by Philip Gelatt, a director who hasn’t done anything else as far as research can tell, as a director. Gelatt also wrote the screenplay to the movie. The film, originally titled “The Bleeding” was released in the Us in 2011. I remember seeing the cover-art for this film a few months ago and it stood out, the white and red silhouette of a man holding a suitcase on a black background. It’s a great cover for a film that I otherwise knew nothing about.

The plot of the film is intriguing from the start. A family in a country home appear to be battling something from their past, attempting to start fresh. A stranger stops

Europa Report Movie Review 3

Europa Report Movie Review 3
Title: Europa Report Director: Sebastian Cordero Starring: Sharlto Copley, Michael Nyqvist, Embeth Davidtz, Daniel Wu, Christian Camargo, Karolina Wydra, Anamaria Marinca A buzzy American premiere at this summer’s Los Angeles Film Festival, director Sebastian Cordero’s low-boil, sci-fi thriller “Europa Report” has racked up rapturous reviews (it presently stands just shy of 80 percent on Rotten Tomatoes) in large part because of the stark contrast in which it stands to most like-minded genre efforts. Undeniably, it is elegant, understated and wonderfully designed. Unfortunately, it’s also frustratingly hackneyed — a solidly cast, interesting budget concept absolutely wrecked by cross-cutting and needless voiceover. Penned by Philip Gelatt (“The Bleeding House”), the film centers [ Read More ]

Terrific First Full-Length Trailer for Europa Report with Sharlto Copley

  • HeyUGuys
Back in November last year, we saw a very intriguing first teaser trailer for The Europa Report, a sci-fi thriller movie led by District 9’s Sharlto Copley.

At the time, we weren’t sure exactly when to expect it to hit theatres. But with Magnet since setting the film’s release date for this summer, hitting VOD in June and theatres in August, the first full-length trailer has been released, and it has us even more intrigued.

A unique blend of documentary, alternative history and science fiction thriller, Europa Report follows a contemporary mission to Jupiter’s moon Europa to investigate the possible existence of alien life within our solar system. When unmanned probes suggest that a hidden ocean could exist underneath Europa’s icy surface and may contain single-celled life, Europa Ventures, a privately funded space exploration company, sends six of the best astronauts from around the world

Intriguing First Teaser Trailer for The Europa Report with Sharlto Copley

  • HeyUGuys
Having made a name for himself in District 9, Sharlto Copley has an excellent year ahead of him, with leading roles in Neill Blomkamp’s next film, Elysium, Spike Lee’s Oldboy remake, and the mysterious The Europa Report from director Sebastián Cordero.

The intriguing space thriller launched a viral website earlier in the year, and now the first teaser trailer has gone live, keeping the sense of mystery surrounding the film.

“A group of astronauts, handpicked from around the world, make the arduous journey to Jupiter’s frigid, glacial moon Europa in search of extraterrestrial life. The only thing more intimidating and unpredictable than the trip itself is what the team will encounter upon arrival…”

Copley stars alongside an international cast, headed up by Michael Nyqvist, Daniel Wu, Christian Camargo, Karolina Wydra, Isiah Whitlock, Jr., and Anamaria Marinca.

Cordero (Chronicles) is directing from a script by Philip Gelatt (The Bleeding

New Sci-Fi Project 'Europa' Developing with Sharlto Copley Attached

I always love hearing about great new sci-fi films in the works. Deadline reports on a new sci-fi project being sold at Tiff titled Europa, a "contemporary space adventure" developed by Wayfare Entertainment and Misher Films. Spanish director Sebastian Cordero is at the helm, and has a cast attached that includes District 9's Sharlto Copley, Michael Nyquist (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Anamaria Marinca (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days) and "Asian superstar" Daniel Wu. Quite a unique cast. The project is fully funded and has a screenplay by Philip Gelatt (The Bleeding House). You've got to hear that this is about. Europa is the story of a six-person team of astronauts from various international space stations who are sent by a private sector corporation to be the first manned mission to Jupiter's fourth moon. Discovered in 1610 by Galileo, Europa is one of the big celestial bodies in our ...

Don't Miss The Bleeding House on DVD

Flannery O'Connor was never this grotesque but I do wonder what she would have thought of The Bleeding House. This independent grotesque mixes religion and blood in equal parts into a taut suspense thriller even as it neatly character studies victim and vile killer alike. Patrick Breen absolutely lights up the screen as Nick, a psychotic serial killer who may or may not have a conscience of some sort. The rest of the players here keep up just fine but it's Breen who lulls us into a trance with his lilting Southern accent and white linen suit. He's like some impossible Capote come to haunt us from Hell, wrongly inspired by the writing of his In Cold Blood. Faulkner comes to mind as well. The...

The Bleeding House Movie Review
Title: The Bleeding House Director: Philip Gelatt Starring: Alexandra Chando (‘As The World Turns’), Patrick Breen (‘Men in Black’) and Betsy Aidem (‘Far From Heaven’) While his characters are trying to run from their past, first time director and screenwriter Philip Gelatt is trying to pave the way for his filmmaking future with his debut movie, ‘The Bleeding House.’ The horror thriller, which had a successful run at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, strives to create an original idea about the fear people have when dealing with their past actions in a genre that’s success is based on purely violent sequels and remakes. While Gelatt deserves credit for striving to...

Philip Gelatt on The Bleeding House

Tribeca: Tell us a little about The Bleeding House. Philip Gelatt: The Bleeding House is a dark thriller about a family suffering under the weight of some ambiguous past sin, their creepy daughter and the stranger who comes to visit them one night. Then things get bloody and uncomfortable... Tribeca: What inspired you to tell this story as your writing/directing debut? Philip Gelatt: I love genre movies and genre storytelling, and I knew my first effort had to be something very contained, and small. And when I put those things together in my head and started mulling them over, horror film ideas just started coming together. Lucky for me, I love horror films. The first thing I had in mind was the setting: an old house, in the middle of nowhere. Tribeca: Who or what (films) are some of your influences as a filmmaker? Philip Gelatt:

Tribeca '11 Exclusive Interview: The Bleeding House 's Philip Gelatt

One of the Tribeca Film Festival's smaller genre offerings that packed plenty of menace this year was Philip Gelatt's The Bleeding House - a title that you will understand once you see it. And no, it's not a chiller about a haunted abode where the walls run red. Gelatt's slow-simmer tale focuses on a family of four trying to forget about the past and move on. That's hard to do, however, when a tall stranger - embodied by Patrick Breen ( Cirque du Freak , Men in Black ) - comes a-callin' and he's out to sate his bloodlust. Shock spoke to Gelatt who is making his directorial feature debut with the film. Shock Till You Drop: What was your background prior to this? Were you dabbling in short films? If you were, what kind of subject matter were you attacking with your films...
