Storyline

A suspected jewel robber, his ex-girl-friend and a cop who became more than friends with her are all killed by a sniper, who turns out to be a sixteen-year-old boy. It is assumed that he is carrying out the murders to impress gang leader Kali Manchetta and become one of his gang but he has a more personal reason. Pontus risks his life in pursuit of the murderer for which he is initially rebuked by Wallander for not being a team player and endangering his colleagues though Wallander comes to see the young man's bravery. Pontus also holds out against his estranged father who has come to persuade him to join the family law firm, using Pontus's illegitimate son as the lure. Pontus resists but for the first time begins to bond with the child. Written by don @ minifie-1

Father-son parallel relationships highlighted in story of a teenage ("brat") sniper
4 June 2012 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

You're as good as your best work, and a series is as good as its best episodes. This is one of the best.

Pontus takes center stage. We learn what's troubling him. Involved in this character development are his father and his own son whom he has rejected. Parallel to this is a young teenage sniper whose motivations also are engaged due to his father's death.

Along the way, the story places on display underworld gun dealers, a gang of snipers, and cops who develop criminal sources and wish to protect them, even when other cops need information.

Wallander continues to use psychology in dealing with those around him. This comes out especially in his interviews. But Pontus is a mystery to him. He won't obey orders and yet he is brilliant. Only when Pontus's father pays Kurt a visit does he begin to understand and protect Pontus, like a father.

This is a well-constructed and complex story. I rate it more highly because of its seamless meshing of an exciting story with the personal lives of the main characters. I'll have to watch it again some time. Reading the subtitles and keeping track of the foreign names being tossed around quickly was not easy.
