We protect the ones we love: theme of a superior episode
7 June 2012 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Wallander returned to excellent form in this standout episode.

Ironies abound in this well-written and tense story. Most of them illustrate that we protect the ones we love, and we break the rules in doing it. Life is filled with paradoxes and that is also illustrated here.

In order to pay off a gambling debt, two masked robbers enter an apartment. One kills the woman who lives there when she accidentally comes home. The trail leads to an athletic or boxing club. Isabelle is recognized by one of the boxers who was her lover 5 years earlier, and that leads to a knot of complications.

Meanwhile Catherine's daughter has stolen some cell phones as a misguided protest against her mother for having moved to Ystad. This subplot will tie in morally with the rest of the story.

Wallander is restored to a major position in the story, although much of it centers around Isabelle and Pontus.

The remaining characters both at the boxing club and to whom is owed money add plenty of tension.

This episode has slightly less use of the cell phone. I've been meaning to point out that the cell phone use was getting awfully, awfully heavy in the last few episodes. This permits fragmentation of scenes, but it also cuts down on the face-to-face scenes that are often the most telling.
