A Controversial Period In The Band's History
25 June 2015 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

The sixth episode of The Beatles Anthology covers the period July 1966 to June 1967 which covers a controversial period in the band history particularly when they toured the Philippines and when John Lennon made an opinion about contemporary times when he made a comparison between the band's popularity and Jesus. In addition to that, the viewer also get more into depth about the new musical direction the band has taken into with the new songs and new albums the band has released as well as the last stages of their world tour.

The band members started to recall their negative experiences that they have had as a band when they toured the Philippines.Paul,George,Ringo and the archived footage of John have seen that their tour of the country was something they regretted.Upon their arrival, they felt nothing but discomfort and awkwardness especially when how they were handled by the Filipino concert promoters with regards to their tour arrangements. Also, their alleged snub of then First Lady Imelda Marcos and her family only made it worse. The band felt they weren't completely notified of the event. Also, they felt that the treatment of they got from Filipinos who threw things at them upon leaving the country was something they truly despised. All of them made a promise not to return to the country as long as they live.It also made a bad impression of the country for anyone who is watching this film especially when Paul McCartney stated that issues about predominance of corruption and how backward the country is in terms of progress.

After the Philippines, the band faced more controversy especially when John Lennon was asked about his opinion of contemporary times. He stated that people how regressed spiritually especially now that Beatles is more popular than Jesus. This made a lot of Christians angry particularly Americans who started burning Beatles records and albums. Also, they got criticized by a lot of people for it.It led to concerts wherein they performed that were not sold out and a lot of empty seats. The band members recalled this particular experience but all found support in John's statement for they all told everyone that they never said they were better than Jesus but only more popular as people has taken for granted their spiritual life. Also, footages were shown with Brian Epstein trying to rectify the situation and the statement of John was completely misunderstood.

After these controversial periods in the band, they finally decided to end their world tour as they felt that the things that have happened only made them feel more pressure. That is why they had their last concert in San Francisco back in August 1966.

Aside from the controversies, the new musical direction that the band was headed to was greatly explored.Footage of the band playing songs like Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band,With a Little Help from My Friends,Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!,Eleanor Rigby and Strawberry Fields Forever were shown.Their musical direction as individuals were also shown. Finally, the band rested after having their last concert in San Francisco that their individual activities away from the band was discussed like George's visit to India,John and Ringo going to Spain with the former acting, and Paul working with George Martin for a song in the movie The Family Way entitled Love in the Open Air.

Viewers will definitely be delighted with this sixth part of the documentary for the Beatle fans got a clearer perspective about the controversial periods that the band has gone through during this time. They got to hear everything from all the members and saw how this controversial period became a transition period for the band as what followed after these events are the long haired bearded Beatles. It was evident that the rest that they took from the touring also resulted in the changes musically and creatively both as individuals and as a band.
