Engaging pilot for the "Blue Murder" TV series
20 August 2011 | by See all my reviews

Recently promoted to Chief Inspector, Detective Janine Lewis has also recently separated from her husband after she caught him cheating on her; now she is trying to balance her demanding work with her equally demanding (she has three kids, and one more on the way!) home life. On a Saturday, she is called in to investigate the knife slashing of a teacher; the three main suspects are the teacher's wife, a former student who had been involved in at least two violent incident with him, and a neighbor with a criminal past (with a similar crime) who has gone missing.

This is the two-part pilot for the "Blue Murder" TV series, and it succeeds on pretty much all levels: the mystery is engaging and keeps you guessing to the end, the characters are believable and relatable, the locations feel fresh, the cutting back-and-forth between the case being investigated, Janine's personal problems, and the interactions between the members of her police team works fine, and despite the 140-minute running time in total, there are few if any slow spots. Good acting all around, with Gillian Kearney a knockout. *** out of 4.
