Agency Verve Expands Into TV With Sales

8 December 2010 6:30 AM, PST | Deadline TV | See recent Deadline TV news »

Upstart talent and literary agency Verve was launched almost a year ago by three former Endeavor agents, Bill Weinstein, Bryan Besser and Adam Levine, who left Wme several months after the Endeavor-wma merger. Because of the trio's pedigree - they are all motion picture lit agents - Verve started building its business on the feature side but has been expanding into TV. And to prove that there is no bad blood between the Verve partners and their former employer, a couple of the TV projects are being done in conjunction with Wme. Here are some notable TV sales by Verve clients: Victoria Strouse (Apostles of Infinite Love, Little Fockers on-set writer) is writing Consulting Adults for NBC, with 20th TV and studio-based Chernin Entertainment producing. It is an office show about a team of corporate consultants who advise people on how to fix their companies, even though their personal lives are quite dysfunctional. »

Mark Wahlberg's Producing and May Star in The Raven

8 December 2010 12:30 AM, PST | movies.about.com | See recent About.com Hollywood Movies news »

Ricardo De Montreuil's short film The Raven is edging closer to becoming a feature-length film as Universal Pictures just closed the deal to make the movie, reports The Hollywood Reporter. Mark Wahlberg is attached as producer and could also star in the film.

This Raven has nothing to do with Edgar Allen Poe, although a film based on the last days of the poet's life is currently being shot with John Cusack playing Poe. It's pretty much a given one of these projects will undergo a name change before it hits theaters.

The official Facebook site for the short film has this synopsis: "Chris Black possesses a power that could lead to the destruction of the current regime, and they will stop at nothing to destroy him. The chase is on as Chris runs for his life in this sci-fi thriller set in an alternate and futuristic Los Angeles. »

7 December 2010 8:04 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Ben Foster, Giovanni Ribisi, and Caleb Landry Jones have all joined Contraband, a thriller set up at Universal Pictures starring Mark Wahlberg and Kate Beckinsale.

The movie features Wahlberg as a retired smuggler named Chris, who is pulled back into the illegal business for the typical “one last job,” and becomes embroiled in a dangerous mission to avoid customs and rescue his family.  Baltasar Kormákur, who starred in and produced the Icelandic original Reykjavik-Rotterdam, is directing the American remake in early 2011 for a release on March 16, 2012.

According to Variety, Jones will play Wahlberg’s brother-in-law, Andy, who botches a drug deal and lands himself in hot water with some shady, unforgiving types.  If it sounds like Gone in 60 Seconds with shipments instead of cars, that’s because it is essentially the same plot.  The script by Aaron Guzikowski takes a few predictable turns, but the suspense hinges on a »

Casting Notes: Abigail Spencer in ‘This Means War’; Ben Foster and Giovanni Ribisi in ‘Contraband’; Liam Hemsworth in John Singleton’s ‘Broken Run’

2 December 2010 5:00 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Add one more to the cast of McG's This Means War, in which Chris Pine and Tom Hardy go to war over the affections of Reese Witherspoon. (Angela Bassett was just cast [1] the other day.) Mad Men's Abigail Spencer has signed on; she'll play Tom Hardy's ex-wife. Personally, I might do more fighting over her than Reese Witherspoon, but that's just me. [THR [2]] After the break, Ben Foster joins a Mark Wahlberg movie, and John Singleton will direct the younger Hemsworth. I'm more curious about Contraband than most of the other Mark Wahlberg projects that are on deck, mostly because it is a remake [3] of the 2008 Icelandic film Reykjavic-Rotterdam. (And is being directed by that film's star and producer, Baltasar Kormakur.) Now I'm far more interested because the very talented Ben Foster has joined the cast, as has Giovanni Ribisi. (Also a talented guy, obviously.) Mark Wahlberg plays »

Ben Foster Turns Action Star For Contraband

2 December 2010 7:00 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Ben Foster last made a big impact with a deeply committed and unsettling role in the super-tiny indie The Messenger, which snagged two Oscar nominations including one for his co-star Woody Harrelson and reminded a lot of us, once again, what a promising young actor he is. Foster's reacted strangely to all the buzz the movie got him, though, signing on for a role in the Jason Statham-starring The Mechanic (out next year) and now, according to Deadline, agreeing to play Mark Wahlberg's sidekick. Foster has joined the cast of Contraband, an English-language remake of an Icelandic hit with a plot straight out of pretty much every other crime thriller you've heard of. Wahlberg plays a former smuggler trying to go straight, dragged in for one last job when his wife's brother botches a gig. Kate Beckinsale will play the wife, and Foster will play Wahlberg's "best friend »
