The original Yorktown (CV 5) was christened by Eleanor Roosevelt in 1942 and participated in hit-and-run raids against the Japanese until it was torpedoed during the Battle of the Coral Sea. Back at Pearl Harbor, it was hastily repaired -- in three days rather than months -- in time to contribute to the Japanese defeat at Midway, although she was torpedoed and sunk.
The new Yorktown (CV 10) was to be designated the Bonhomme Richard (pronounced "Bone 'em, Richard" by the narrator). It was a member of the new Essex class, larger and more powerful than the original. The new ship served throughout the remainder of the Pacific War and again in Vietnam before finding a place as part of the Maritime Museum in Charleston, South Carolina.
