As 2012 begins, here are Tao Jones’s picks for the best, the worst and the most memorable events, individuals and phenomena of the year that was.

Even though there were several TV misfires in 2011, there was a ton of good things about this year’s TV-watching season. Here’s a list of the top 10 shows of 2011 . 1.“Luther”: Idris Elba hasn’t been nominated for a Golden Globe for nothing. BBC/BBC America’s “Luther” is a critically-acclaimed show from across the pond that features a detective who fights crime while dealing with his internal struggle, sometimes, violently so. This show is also notable because, at least in America, it’s one of the few shows that has a person of color as their lead character, thus broadening the landscape of viable actors in Hollywood. 2.“The Walking Dead”: AMC »

Repeat after me: There is no shame in staying home on New Year’s Eve. There is no shame in staying home on New Year’s Eve. If you are hanging at home as 2011 rolls over into 2012, here’s a list of artists you can see on various New Year’s Eve specials as the ball drops. By the way, did you know that Dick Clark started “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” in 1972 so that the crazy kids would have something to watch on TV besides bandleader Guy Lombardo’s Dec. 31 specials? If none of these appeal, there’s always “The Walking Dead” marathon »

When done well, zombies entertain us cinemagoers and TV viewers alike to no end, and sometimes for very different reasons. In Shaun of the Dead, we got a brilliant horror-comedy from the likes of Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and Edgar Wright, that was by far the best film of its kind I’ve ever seen, before or since. And more recently, the TV adaptation of The Walking Dead has brought us zombies of a very different and entirely more intense nature. Both kinds, it goes without saying, are excellent.
Now, courtesy of Flickr user Yatkuu, via Collider, we’ve been treated to a terrific re-imagining of what Shaun of the Dead and The Walking Dead might look like if they were turned into Lego toys. And the images are really very impressive.
If you’re yet to see either Shaun of the Dead or The Walking Dead, needless to say, »

The Walking Dead – Zombie New Years Marathon
Do you want to spend New Year’s Eve with the dead? AMC is giving everyone the chance to ring in 2012 with zombies, brains, guns, and a whole lot of post-apocalyptic stress with the Walking Dead New Year’s Eve Marathon.
New Year’s Eve will be the perfect time to catch up with AMC’s The Walking Dead in case you didn’t hop onto the zombie bandwagon when the series first started in Fall 2010, or if you just want to relive all the action and drama that the show delivers.
THR has revealed that the Season 1 pilot, Days Gone By, will air at 11Am Est on Saturday, December 31 and the undead action will continue through all 13 episodes of the series, with the Season 2 mid-season finale, Pretty Much Dead Already, ushering in the new year at midnight. Really, is there any better »

"The Walking Dead" Marathon (11 a.m. to 12 midnight Est on AMC)
If you've missed out on the critically-acclaimed zombie drama or are just trying to avoid all of the other soulless, dead-eyed beings that congregate on New Year's Eve, it's your lucky night: AMC is re-airing "The Walking Dead" in its entirety, from the premiere episode to the recently-aired midseason finale. It's a gory way to celebrate 2012, but it's probably less messy than going out for the night.
"Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2012" (8 p.m. to 2:13 a.m. Est on ABC)
Those intro tradition can keep it locked on the alphabet network for nearly 5.5 hours of bi-coastal New Year's festivities, presided over by the eponymous Dick Clark and the ever-present Ryan Seacrest. Things kick off at 8 p.m. with "New Year's Rockin' Eve: The 40th Anniversary Party," hosted by Jenny McCarthy in Times Square and Fergie in Los Angeles. »

The grand New Year is nearly upon us, (Yay, Joy, Rapture, etc.), so everyone is of course resolutioning this and promising that once the clock strokes the ball-dropping tone of midnight. For those of us in tune with our favorite shows, I’m sure there are plenty that will use one of those New Year’s pledges to commit more of their time to watching them. One of those favorite shows should definitely be AMC’s The Walking Dead. If it’s not, you really don’t know what you’re missing. In any other case, not knowing what you’re missing might not be a big deal but this case simply does not apply. Watch the show, it’s good. I really don’t know how else to put it.
Since I’m trying to be kind, I’ll avoid revealing »

“The next Lost.” For the past seven years, it’s been a TV industry grail quest, and, for the past 18 months since Lost left the air, a felt need for those who not only miss the Oceanic 815 castaways and the Island but the sense of community that the show spawned. From the moment ABC’s saga about redemption-needy souls trapped in a mystical, tropical purgatory became an instant phenom in September of 2004, the leading purveyors of small-screen entertainment have been trying to replicate the success of a cult pop property tailored to our Comic-Con culture that somehow managed to connect »

Not everyone looks good battling zombies in a post-apocalyptic world. Sure, Laurie Holden pulls it off very nicely in "The Walking Dead," but she seems to be the exception to the rule. Normally survivors appear to be disheveled, crusty and undoubtedly stinkier than we'd care to imagine. That is, until Triple Burn Productions introduced us to Jessa Kill.
Writer/director Justin Brooks has recently released the first episode of his web series Jessa Kill about a sexy, feisty zombie holocaust survivor who has no intention of becoming food for the walking dead. In fact, they're going to need some protection from her! It's a combination of live action and motion comics starring Ally Tully in the role of Jessa! Check out the first episode of the series below (starring Tully and Chris Harnell), and follow the progress of the series at the official Jessa Kill website.

News broke Wednesday that comedian/actor Jim Carrey has a new squeeze - Anastasia Vitkina, a New York City student who previously dated his NoLita restaurant partner David Shoonmaker. Vitkina is just one in a long line of beautiful women Carrey has had on his arm.
The funnyman married Melissa Womer, an actress and Comedy Store waitress, in 1987. It is with Womer that Carrey has his only child, Jane. The pair later divorced in 1995. Jane made them grandparents in 2010 when she and musician husband Alex Santana gave birth to a baby boy.
Carrey later married actress Lauren Holly, whom he met on the set of "Dumb and Dumber." They married in 1996 but divorced later that year.
In 2005, Carrey took up with Jenny McCarthy and the two were together for five years before splitting. In the interim between Holly and McCarthy, Carrey was linked to Renee Zellweger, "The Walking Dead's" Laurie Holden, »

The end of year is always a time for list articles on film sites. Some offer practical and interesting analysis like 'best film' lists. Most however are quickly pulled together inane padding designed to keep the 'torch lights burning' as there's really no news to report over the next fortnight.
So here's another for that pile, a list that Hollywood wishes didn't exist - the most pirated movies of the year list. TorrentFreak has released its top ten most downloaded movies worldwide of 2011 with "Fast Five" winning the pack.
Approximately 9.26 million copies of the film were downloaded over the year. Not far behind in second and third were "The Hangover Part II" and "Thor" with 8.84 million and 8.33 million respectively. All kicked off the Summer film season and so all have been around longer which explains their higher download count. Here's the full list:
Fast Five - 9.26 million
