Now a patient of Dr. Mohammed in Padworth secure psychiatric hospital, serial killer Linda Cummings sends Boyd a severed finger and a note,'Whatever Happened to Sandra White?' claiming that patient Sandra and a doctor named McCarthy were murdered. Grace is going into hospital for a cancer operation but she warns Boyd to ignore the manipulative Linda as it is a mind game. He ignores her, taking her locum, Jackie Cochran to see Linda who, unnervingly is well-informed of his private life. Eve proves that McCarthy was murdered and his suicide faked whilst Sandra's corpse is unearthed in the hospital garden. Dr. Mohammed - who clashed with McCarthy over Sandra's treatment, pairing her with a boyfriend,fellow patient David O'Neal, had actually told Boyle that Sandra left the hospital and head nurse Penny Cain and security chief Welch support him. Linda, however, tells him that he will be dead in twenty-four hours.
Linda Cummings was convicted some years ago following an investigation by Detective Superintendent Boyd and his cold case team. She has now sent him a cryptic note asking whatever happened to a recently released prisoner, Sandra White. She'a also enclosed a finger that DNA testing shows to have belonged to White. With Grace Foley away in hospital for an operation, her replacement Dr. Jackie Cochrane visits Cummings in prison where the manipulative prisoner suggests to her that White never left the prison. The investigation focuses on the prison psychiatrist, Dr. Mohammed and the guard who supposedly signed White out on the day of her release. They are also puzzled by the apparent suicide of Dr. Dominique McCarthy who supposedly hung himself, something Eve Lockhart is convinced he could not have done.
An old adversary, serial Killer Linda Cummings, entices Boyd to solve 2 more murders. Is she for real or just playing games.
