First and only episode not to begin with "Mr. Monk..." See more »

The first victim was a janitor but the building manager called him the maintenance man. "Janitor" and "maintenance man" are not interchangeable terms and the building manager would know this. Janitors clean while maintenance fixes things (and get paid more). Also, the janitor was shown going a long distance to throw out half a bag of trash. A real janitor would take out all the trash at once instead of making multiple trips. It is also very strange that the janitor was throwing the garbage into the shredder/compactor by handfuls rather than dumping it by bagful. See more »

Natalie Teeger: Okay Mr. Monk congratulations. You win. You're going to spend your birthday alone, and the next birthday after that, and the one after that too, until you finally die alone and pathetic and miserable and sad and alone.
Adrian Monk: Deal. Can we fix the vacuum now?

Ice is nice

Monk's impending 50th birthday is fraught with peril as Natalie plans a surprise party for the reluctant detective. He also gets his hands on a super-duper vacuum cleaner, which he does everything but marry. Meanwhile, people start dying around him. The two plots mesh quite nicely. Meanwhile, the captain meets a woman who might just prove to be a keeper. This is assuming she doesn't turn out to be a killer (remember his last flame?). I must admit the killer in this episode is telegraphed early on, but it is fun watching him try to outmaneuver the defective detective. We get to see Monk as a little boy in a poignant flashback.
