Lots of magical fighting and plenty of plot twists
I knew nothing about this series when I saw it listed on Crunchyroll; but as it was only twelve episodes long I thought I'd check it out... after all even if it was no good I wouldn't have wasted too much time. As it turned out it wasn't a waste of time but nor was it something I'd bother watching again. Like many such anime series this features a high school boy and his friends as they battle against evil forces. Here the protagonist is Kakeru; a boy who wears an eye-patch for initially unexplained reasons. His friends are mostly female although there is one boy in the group so it wasn't quite the cliché harem I was expecting! One day Kakeru and his friend Yuka find themselves pulled in to a parallel world; the world of the red night; here they are confronted by strange monsters. As quickly as they are taken there they find themselves back home where they soon learn that they aren't alone in being taken there; this is when the group of friends start to come together. We are also shown their adversaries and learn that they are keeping a young girl imprisoned in a strange crystal for reasons that don't become apparent till later. Over the course of the series there are many fights and more than one main character dies.
If you like this genre of anime I think you will enjoy this more than I did; there were too many battle scenes for my tastes. Thankfully when they weren't fighting the characters were quite interesting and there were plenty of plot twists that I didn't see coming. The first episode made me think there would be an excess of fan service as it featured panty shots and jiggling breasts; thankfully this didn't continue into later episodes as it would have been too much for those who don't like it and not enough for those that do! Over all I'd recommend this to anybody who enjoys lots of magical fights with strange creatures and some good plot twists but if that isn't your thing give it a miss.
