Edie & Thea: A Very Long Engagement (2009) Poster


Edea Windsor was the plaintiff in the groundbreaking Supreme Court case of Windsor vs. United States, where she sued the IRS to be treated the same as any other married woman who was the spouse of a deceased person. Normally, the surviving spouse in a marriage inherits the estate tax free. Because Edie was lesbian, the IRS did not consider her marriage to Thea to be valid under the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), causing her inheritance tax bill to be $360,000, when any other surviving spouse would owe no taxes. Edie won the case in the US Supreme Court on the basis of lack of equal protection, the first same sex marriage case to be heard by the Supreme Court
