Sex and murder among lesbian women, the goals being $50 million and revenge
10 October 2016 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"Breaking the Girls" (2012) is a neo-noir, replete with machinations and twists in which sex, murder and associated manipulations of emotion are used as tools to attain $50 million and revenge. Under the opening titles with some obscurity we understand that a murder has been committed. Later we learn that the consequence was a $50 million inheritance. Only at the end do we learn all the planning that lay behind obtaining revenge and the money.

The principal characters are either lesbian or bisexual or playing at one or the other of these or playing at being heterosexual. This particular plot could not be developed without these sexual angles. It's done in good taste. There is no nudity to speak of and no more suggestions of sexual acts than one would see between a heterosexual couple in movie after movie after movie. There is a good deal of female same-sex kissing.

The ladies carrying the ball here are all quite believable and enjoyable to watch in their roles. Agnes Bruckner forms a relationship with the Madeline Zima. Zima's character is very interesting and multi-faceted, and she brings it out beautifully. Bruckner also does a very nice job showing us the different sides to her character. In a lesser role, Shanna Collins is a rather nasty co-ed who seeks to undermine Bruckner because of competition over a man (Shawn Ashmore). Kate Levering is married to the man who has all the money at present, and we learn early on that she used to date Zima. A cop comes and goes without too much to do, as is typical in many noirs, and she's Davenia McFadden.

The movie is quite enjoyable. It brings in a "Strangers on a Train" scenario for awhile, but soon departs from that into its own plot twists, piling them quite high. I do believe that the current IMDb rating of 5.0 is too low. That would suggest a movie distinctly below-par, and this one is in line with other such noirs of its kind. They are fun. The delight is mainly in the machinations, but these plot twists are not without some depth of characters and some decent acting.
