Series 3 really does open with the goods
16 August 2015 | by (Swansea, United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

Here it is, the start of the third and final Series of the excellent Ashes to Ashes.

At the start Alex is seemingly back in the present day discussing her experiences with a professional, and merely dreaming of Gene Hunt and co. In a reverse Alex is seemingly back in 1983, but in a coma there, and living out a dream state in modern times. Confused? I was..... Each member please for her return, a seriously powerful opening.

1983 and she's back. Gene's been on the run for shooting her. 'Sweet Dreams,' Audi Quattro and we're back on form.

Young Dottie has been kidnapped and a ransom video appears in code. DCI Jim Keates appears from Discipline and Complaints to interview Gene. He's also seemingly given Alex a coded message. Unfortunately the Police sting goes wrong and the plot comes to life. Keates motive come out at the end, he's definitely after Hunt.

More questions are asked, who's the cop with the blown off face? and what did Gene do 3 years ago?

Some really funny lines again, Hunt smirks to Drake 'You're like Bamber Gascgoine in drag.' I was sad to see that Chris and Shaz had split, especially as they both seem to have become good looking since Series 1. Finally Gene gives Shaz a little bit of respect and some responsibility. It is a very complex and thought provoking plot. The introduction of the very excellent Daniel Mays is fantastic, he looks perfect for the part.

The effects of 'Gary Soper' in Prison are incredibly realistic.

The countdown timer is very effective at adding tension, to what is an already highly tense and pressured episode.

Overall this is a totally brilliant episode, what a class start to Series 3, more please. I now love all of the characters and don't want the series to end!!
