Nearly 2000 years ago Aristarchus of Samos calculated the distance from the Earth to the moon and from the Earth to the sun. Eclipses are critical to the calculation as they provide the apparent relative sizes of the Earth versus the sun and Earth versus the moon. Coupled with the a method used by Aristophanes to determine the diameter of the Earth these distances can be calculated.

The Riemann Hypothesis relates infinite series to prime numbers. Pi, the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of a circle factors in to it as well. It is one of just a few of the 23 most important unproven mathematical principles proposed by David Hilbert that is still unproven. There is a One million dollar prize for a solution if you'd like to try your hand at it.

The degree to which light is refracted when passing from one medium to another is directly related to the speed of light in each medium as Andrew demonstrates. With that foundation he shows that Quantum Electrodynamics predicts that light will follow the path of least time between its source and destination.
