What Former Athlete Is the Best Movie Actor?

7 July 2014 8:00 PM, PDT | | See recent news »

Over the weekend, Olympic medalist and professional Mma fighter Ronda Rousey successfully defended her title as Ufc Women's Bantamweight Champion. It's great news for her and even better news for The Expendables 3, which is getting some an extra bit of publicity via the win. Rousey costars in the upcoming sequel alongside Sylvester Stallone and many other action stars, and she'll be in Fast & Furious 7, which isn't surprising given how much that franchise likes to employ former and current athletes in its roster of players. The last Fast & Furious movie, for instance cast fellow female Mma fighter Gina Carano, who had already proven her acting talents in Steven Soderbergh's Haywire, as well as bodybuilder-turned-actor Kim Kold and of course...

24 June 2014 4:38 PM, PDT | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

Here are some of the hottest action heroines who could totally rule in the upcoming 'Predator' remake!

News broke today on The Hollywood Reporter that another beloved 80s classic is on the slate for a trendy millennial reboot. This time, it's the iconic action horror Predator, and it's reportedly set to be helmed by Kiss Kiss Bang Bang director/writer Shane Black, who also recently created Iron Man 3!

The original Predator starred an ensemble of classic macho '80s musclemen, led by Arnold Schwarzenegger and co-starring Rocky's Carl Weathers and the pro-wrestler-turned-Minnesota-Governor Jesse Ventura.

Channing Tatum, Ralph Fiennes & Tilda Swinton Join George Clooney In The Coens' 'Hail Caesar'

24 June 2014 10:56 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

So maybe let's start this with a hat tip to Channing Tatum and how far he's come. From that guy in the "Step Up" movie, the actor made steady moves to work with directors of note, taking roles in films by Kimberly Peirce ("Stop-Loss"), Michael Mann ("Public Enemies"), Ron Howard ("The Dilemma"), Kevin Macdonald ("The Eagle"), Steven Soderbergh ("Haywire," "Side Effects," "Magic Mike") and Bennett Miller ("Foxcatcher"), and that's not to mention becoming the star of franchises like "G.I. Joe" and "21 Jump Street." And so, don't be surprised that the Coens have tapped the actor for their next film. Indeed, the Coens have rounded up Tatum, Tilda Swinton and Ralph Fiennes to join George Clooney in "Hail Caesar." The story will follow a fixer in the 1950s who works for Hollywood studios to protect their stars, with Tatum to play a Gene Kelly-esque actor, Fiennes a »

Channing Tatum Says “I’m About as in as I Could Possibly Be” for Gambit; Hopes to “Change Up” the Superhero Movie

6 June 2014 11:45 AM, PDT | | See recent news »

Though the “McConaissance” is all the rage at the moment, actor Channing Tatum has been undergoing a pretty impressive career transformation of his own over the past couple of years.  After working in films like Step Up, Dear John, and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra early in his career, Tatum started taking some big risks with excellent payoffs.  Director Steven Soderbergh brought out a different side of the actor in Magic Mike, Haywire, and Side Effects, he proved to be fantastically adept at comedy with standout roles in 21 Jump Street and This Is the End, and he drew raves for his dramatic work in the dark drama Foxcatcher at that film’s Cannes premiere last month.  With these eclectic performances under his belt, Tatum now has his eyes set on something many other actors are vying for: his own superhero movie. Tatum has been keen on playing the X-Men »

The Best Movie Revenge Missions

2 June 2014 4:00 AM, PDT | | See recent HeyUGuys news »

It is a dish best served cold, so they say. It is also, at least as far as cinema is concerned, less straight-forward than you might think. Someone might be on a mission and it might seem to be revenge-like, but if it turns into a rescue, does that disqualify it?

What if there is a revenge element to an otherwise-themed film? Take Taken, if you will. He wants his daughter back and is prepared to use a particular set of skills to do so, but he clearly wants some measure of revenge on the kidnappers as well. What are we to do? We could debate such questions endlessly.

With this week’s release of In The Blood , Haywire’s Gina Carano is going to have at those she holds responsible for her husband’s disappearance. So, instead of nit-picking, let’s visit some of the best revenge missions that »

Channing Tatum To Produce And Star In Untitled Crime Thriller For Sony

7 May 2014 10:50 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Sony Pictures is hoping to send Channing Tatum undercover once again, as the studio has just picked up an untitled crime thriller which the actor will both star in and produce. Inspired by a true story, the 1970′s set film will follow an ordinary family man who “risks everything by going undercover to take down the biggest mob boss in the country.”

Scripted by Kristin Gore (who penned David O. Russell’s incomplete Nailed), this project certainly sounds like it could be a good star vehicle for Tatum. After showing off both his comedic and action chops over the past couple of years, with films like White House Down, 21 Jump Street (and its sequel), Haywire and several others, it will be nice to see him return to a more serious, grounded and dramatic role.

Plus, a crime thriller is one of the few movies that Tatum hasn’t made yet. »

Q&A: Relativity President Tucker Tooley

6 May 2014 10:00 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

As president of Relativity Media, Tucker Tooley credits his successful collaboration with Ryan Kavanaugh to their differences. “I think any good partnership has to have completely different skill sets and bring something different to the table,” notes Tooley. “Because if you do the exact same thing, you’re just duplicating what each other does.”

Prior to joining Relativity Media in 2007 as president of worldwide production, Tooley was an independent producer whose credits include the Vin Diesel vehicle “A Man Apart” and Lee Daniels’ “Shadowboxer.” At the time, Relativity was co-financing movies, but not producing its own films.

“All of a sudden Ryan was getting scripts, movies submitted in to finance, and I think the light bulb went off,” says Tooley. “So he brought me in to really kind of launch the single picture division.”

Since then, Tooley has overseen production on such key Relativity titles as “Dear John,” “Haywire” and “We’re the Millers, »

Gina Carano Weighs In On Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman Casting In Batman Vs. Superman

26 April 2014 11:26 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Long before Gal Gadot landed the coveted job of playing Wonder Woman in Zack Snyder’s upcoming Man of Steel sequel, many fans had former mixed martial artist Gina Carano in mind for the Amazonian princess. After all, she looks the part, and could easily snap men in half without breaking a sweat.

In a recent interview with Toronto Sun, Carano weighed in on the controversial casting decision, and claims that she was never actually approached for the part in Batman vs. Superman:

“[The rumors] started about four or five years ago, even before Haywire people were saying stuff like that. I was never approached, and I don’t know if I was considered.”

As for Gadot landing the role? She seems confident that her Fast and Furious 6 co-star will do a good job, and doesn’t see her physical appearance or fitness as an issue.

Henry Cavill And On-Off Girlfriend Gina Carano Are Back On

Man of Steel star Henry Cavill appears to be rekindling the romance with his on-off girlfriend Gina Carano, a mixed-martial arts champion-turned-actress.

Henry Cavill & Gina Carano Back Together?

Cavill has been spending a lot of time in Chicago, where Batman vs. Superman will be filming later this year. Carano has reportedly been joining the 30-year-old actor in the Windy City, reported Page Six. The pair has apparently been spotted having drinks at the Vertigo Sky Lounge and dining at SushiSamba.

Carano’s charisma in the Mma ring helped her launch a career in the movies, starting with Haywire, which Steven Soderbergh created specifically for her. She also scored a role in Fast & Furious 6. Though she’s also landed a part in an announced Adi Shankar project, Carano might be turning her sights on the Ufc Octagon.

Channing Tatum Says He’s Met about Playing Gambit; Reveals “Everyone” Will Likely Be Back for Magic Mike 2

15 April 2014 10:24 AM, PDT | | See recent news »

Though few can rival Matthew McConaughey in the realm of “career renaissance” at the moment, Channing Tatum has undergone a fascinating transformation over the past few years.  He first broke out as a model-slash-actor in the first Step Up, but he began branching out with Steven Soderbergh’s 2011 film Haywire.  He subsequently collaborated with Soderbergh on two more films to excellent results—Magic Mike and Side Effects—and proved himself a very skilled comedic actor with turns in 21 Jump Street and This Is the End.  His upcoming films range from dark drama (Foxcatchter) to hard sci-fi/fantasy (Jupiter Ascending), and there are also a few more exciting prospects on the horizon. During a recent interview with MTV, Tatum revealed that he has indeed met about playing Gambit in a potential X-Men spinoff film, expressing his love for the character and willingness to tackle the role.  He also provided an update »

Title: In the Blood Director: John Stockwell Starring: Gina Carano, Cam Gigandet, Treat Williams, Danny Trejo, Luiz Guzman, Amaury Nolasco, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Stephen Lang If we’re keeping tabs on the evolving filmography of ex-mixed martial arts fighter and future “The Expendabelles” centerpiece Gina Carano, “In the Blood,” from director John Stockwell, slots considerably below “Haywire,” her at once lithe and bruising collaboration with Stephen Soderbergh. And yet there’s still a certain ramshackle appeal to the film, a starchy, “Taken”-meets-”Turistas” revenge picture which could just as easily be titled “Woman on Fire.” “In the Blood” centers around Ava (Carano) and Derek Grant (Cam Gigandet), a newly married couple who head to the Caribbean  [ Read More ]

Film Review: ‘In the Blood’

3 April 2014 11:12 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Pulses are likely to remain level during “In the Blood,” a serviceable vehicle for Mma champ Gina Carano (“Haywire”). In a plot that variously recalls “True Lies,” “The Long Kiss Goodnight” and “Kill Bill,” Carano plays a new bride looking forward to a tranquil domestic life who’s forced to deploy her secret, all-purpose beatdown skills after her husband disappears. Given the limited release (the film is opening simultaneously on VOD), B.O. potency will depend on getting the word out to Carano’s fans, who may already be used to watching her on pay-per-view.

Perhaps inadvertently, the kidnapped-vacationers plot revisits territory director John Stockwell explored in 2006′s organ-trafficking thriller “Turistas,” down to a subplot involving a nonconsensual transfusion. A prologue sets the stage on the mean streets of Bridgeport, Conn., in 2002, when Ava (played as a teenager by Paloma Olympia Louvat) witnesses and avenges the murder of her self-styled »
