The most touching kids show episode since Suite Life's "A Prom Story."
20 March 2010 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Even a cynic like myself can have some sense of romance within him, and this episode stirs it up a bit. Not since The Suite Life of Zack and Cody's "Prom Story" episode has there been a more heart-warming episode of a kid's show.

Carly has her heart set on a boy for the Girl's choice dance, but the boy she likes already has somebody else. Sam has no interest in anybody, and Freddie has three girls asking him out, including the magic-obsessed Malika, played by a girl named Skyler Day. Malika wears a long-flowing purple magician's robe a matching hat, way too much makeup, and annoys the hell of most everyone she meets, but she's anything but boring. Of course, Freddie's holding out for Carly, but as with most of the series, she's not interested. When Sam hijacks an iCarly web cast to beg for boys for Carly, she forces her sidekick to ask Gibby to the dance in retaliation, yet for some reason he turns her down. Meanwhile, Carly finds that due to Sam's stunt, she's overwhelmed with potential suitors.

With the mob of boys at the Groovy Smoothie seeking a night with her at the dance, Freddie decides that the best way to sort them out is with a speed-dating contest, where everybody sorts out boys that they think Carly would like. Of course, Freddie uses this to do the opposite so he can go out with her someday, but has to settle for Magical Malika, who spends their date performing magic tricks at his expense. As for Carly at first, the boy she chooses seems fascinating, but eventually she finds him more annoying than Malika and chases him away. It's then that Freddie suggests that they deserve to share a dance to make up for their rotten dates, and she actually agrees. It's the closest they'll both come to being a couple until "iSaved Your Life" four months later. The episode also introduced many a fan to the music of Chrissy Chase.

Oh, but there's something here that Danny Kallis, Jim Geoghan, and Pamela Eells-O'Connell didn't add to Zack & Cody; Sam walking in on Carly & Freddie at the Groovie Smoothie while they slow dance, and then walking out in jealousy. The staff at Schneider's Bakery is exploiting the potential unrequited sexual tension not only between Carly and Freddie, but between Sam and Freddie that has been hyped up just before "iKiss," an episode I'll comment on later. If we're lucky, the story lines won't devolve into soap opera tripe that the fourth and fifth seasons of Daria nearly did, and some believe actually did.
