The Gang Gives Frank an Intervention !
24 October 2015 | by (Saudi Arabia) – See all my reviews

As the title suggests, the Gang feels that Frank (Danny Devito) is out of control, due to the fact that he's not-so-secretly sipping red wine from a soda can and drunkenly hitting on his ex-wife's sister Aunt Donna (Nora Dunn from SNL) at her husband's funeral. The Gang from Paddy's Pub are certainly not saints, but even they know that's sick behavior, so they consult a professional to help them plan an intervention.

Not surprisingly, their consultation does not go smoothly. Whereas the doctor suggests they approach Frank with love and support, Dennis (Glenn Howerton) suggests they "come at him with an iron fist and crush him into submission." When they decide that bringing firearms to the intervention is a good idea, it's clear they're on a different page than the doctor.

From there, things just get weirder as we're introduced to Gail "The Snail" (Mary Lynn Rajskub from 24), Aunt Donna's creepy and disgusting daughter, who might remind some of a long-lost McPoyle relative. Growing up, she had the habit of clinging onto Dennis and Dee at family gatherings, so much so that they had to pour salt on her to drive her away. (Get it? Salt shrivels up a snail.)

Danny DeVito Kaitlin Olson, Glenn Howerton, Rob McElhenney and Charlie Day Mac (Rob McElhenney) has the crazy idea of convincing Frank to sleep with Gail (his niece), so he can have a shot at Aunt Donna, thus satisfying his older woman fantasy. (Remember, Mac slept with Donna's sister/Frank's ex-wife in an earlier episode elegantly titled, "Mac Bangs Dennis' Mom.") Mix in the fact that everyone winds up drunk on soda can wine, Frank thinks the intervention is actually a roast, and that Gail has to be "salted" out of their lives once again and you have the makings of a very funny episode.

It should be pointed out that Danny DeVito's work on this show continues to amaze, because Frank is one of the funniest, most offensive characters on television right now. It's a huge coup that Always Sunny got an enormously successful actor to sloppily gargle beer on camera for our amusement (although when he shows up drunk on talk shows, you never know if the lines between fiction and reality have become blurred). It's almost a shame they've gotten so good at pushing the envelope because now we just expect outrageous things to happen. Incestuous, drunken behavior would make headlines on a network show, but here it's just par for the course. There was a ton of great stuff in this episode and I feel had it ran in an earlier season, it would've been even more memorable.
