The Notable Films of 2011: Part Five

31 December 2010 5:23 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

The Factory

Opens: 2011

Cast: John Cusack, Jennifer Carpenter, Ksenia Solo, Mae Whitman, Sonya Walger

Director: Morgan O'Neill

Summary: An obsessed cop is on the trail of a serial killer prowling the streets of Buffalo, New York. When his teenage daughter disappears, he drops any pretension and professional restraint he might have to get the killer.

Analysis: Shot almost three years ago now, Dark Castle had originally planned to release this thriller back in late 2009. However for reasons unspecified, it has been sitting on a shelf for some time and keeps getting delayed. In cases like these, the most obvious reason is usually the correct one - it stinks (eg. "Case 39"). The company certainly has had its fair share of box-office duds lately including "Whiteout," "Ninja Assassin," "The Losers," "Orphan" and "Splice".

Yet Cusack generally has good taste in projects, his last venture into horror was the surprisingly effective Stephen King »

Interview: Kevin Spacey Talks 'Casino Jack', Jack Abramoff

29 December 2010 9:05 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Two time Academy Awad-winning actor Kevin Spacey has earned the respect of his peers and fans around the world with his complex portrayals of a multitude of morally questionable men. His latest role as Superlobbyist Jack Abramoff in the new film, Casino Jack, is no exception—Abramoff is a complicated man with strong religious beliefs and shaky personal morals. Spacey sat down with CinemaSpy to talk about his meetings with the real Abramoff, the loss of director George Hickenlooper and the question of whether Spacey will return permanently to film after a hiatus spent as artistic director of The Old Vic Theater in London.

Your performance as Jack Abramoff is a mix between very over-the-top and very grounded in his beliefs.  How did you strike that balance?

A lot of it was George Hickenlooper.  George had a mantra from the first day that we met which was, “Why are they »

Synopsis: Arthur Bishop (Jason Statham) is a ‘mechanic’ - an elite assassin with a strict code and unique talent for cleanly eliminating targets. It’s a job that requires professional perfection and total detachment, and Bishop is the best in the business. Damsels in Distress

Opens: 2011

Cast: Adam Brody, Analeigh Tipton, Megalyn Echikunwoke, Ryan Metcalf

Director: Whit Stillman

Summary: The story revolves around a group of style-obsessed college girls who take in a new student (Gerwig) and teach her their misguided ways of helping people at their grungy university.

Analysis: The first film in a decade from arthouse darling Whit Stillman, a filmmaker's filmmaker whose three Manhattan-based, yuppie-themed mannerist comedies - "Metropolitan," "Barcelona" and "The Last Days of Disco" - were a big influence on the likes of auteurs such as Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach. Stillman says this film varies somewhat from his previous trilogy of sorts, telling First Things that "This film is different, Completely different. Okay, not completely different, but it’s different".

Independently financed by Castle Rock CEO Martin Shafer, the project recently wrapped filming in Manhattan where Stillman returned to last year after having spent much »

Catch .44

Opens: 2011

Cast: Forest Whitaker, Bruce Willis, Malin Akerman, Nikki Reed, Deborah Ann Woll

Director: Aaron Harvey

Summary: The story focuses on three women being thrust into an extraordinary situation involving a psychopathic hitman, a grizzled trucker and a delusional line cook.

Analysis: Oddly little is known about this indie crime comedy aside from the three lead female roles have gone through more than a couple of rounds of casting musical chairs. The likes of Maggie Grace, Kate Mara, Laura Ramsey, Sarah Roemer, Lizzy Caplan and Lauren German were all attached at one point or another before the final trio of Malin Akerman ("Watchmen"), Nikki Reed ("Twilight") and Deborah Ann Woll ("True Blood") were settled on.

Bruce Willis, Forest Whitaker, Michael Rosenbaum and Brad Dourif also star with Willis as a crime boss behind everything that happens and Whitaker as a dangerously unstable assassin. Aaron Harvey, who last directed »

The year 2010 has been a year chock-full of fresh, young (and not so young – we love you, Machete) faces vying to overthrow the Hollywood’s mainstays — and they’re playing to win. Right, Sam Flynn?

Whether it was the youngest billionaire in history taking over the internet (“The Social Network”), kids beating up adults (“Kick-Ass”) or kids beating up each other (“The Karate Kid”), it’s clear this new batch of rising stars is not a group to mess with.

So hide your kids, hide your wives: Here are our picks for 2010′s biggest breakout stars.

21. Brenda Song

Seen In: “The Social Network

NextFactor: Song’s been known for years to younger audiences as the Paris Hilton clone, London Tipton, on Disney’s “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody.” But adult audiences will find her hard to forget as the less-than-wholesome/pyromaniacal girlfriend of Andrew Garfield in “The Social Network. »

Casino Jack Movie Review

13 December 2010 7:32 PM, PST | ShockYa | See recent ShockYa news »

Title: Casino Jack Director: George Hickenlooper Starring: Kevin Spacey (Horrible Bosses, American Beauty), Ruth Marshall, Graham Greene (New Moon) and Hannah Endicott-Douglas. Studios are often taking a gamble on new movies today, and Art Takes Over is no exception. It’s new biographical film ‘Casino Jack,’ which stars Kevin Spacey as well-meaning-turned-greedy Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff, doesn’t live up to late director George Hickenlooper’s previously high standards. He tried to make ‘Casino Jack’ the next great biography movie of men involved in Washington, D.C. politics, but ultimately fails by attempting to give the plot an unneeded comedic undertone. The film follows lobbyist Jack Abramoff (portrayed by Spacey), who is determined to make as much money [...] »

Adam Sandler Attached to Star in Narco and Offered the Role in The $40,000 Man

13 December 2010 10:56 AM, PST | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Adam Sandler is attached to star in a film called Narco, which is a remake of the 2004 French film The Secret Adventures of Gustave Klopp.  The original movie is about a man with narcolepsy who, each time he falls asleep, dreams of action heroes like Jean-Claude Van Damme.

Sandler was also offered the lead role in a film called The $40,000 Man. Robert Downey Jr. was interested in taking the lead role in this film at one point, but he's too busy right now making a ton of other films.

The script was written by Terry Zwigoff (Ghost World) and recently rewitten by John Francis Daley (Horrible Bosses). The story centers on a legendary astronaut and ‘true American hero,’ who is horribly injured in a car crash and is rebuilt by the government to be a bionic man but on a budget of $40,000, which makes him not that bionic.

First Look: ‘Horrible Bosses’

24 November 2010 5:24 AM, PST | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Warner Bros. have unveiled the first image and synopsis from Horrible Bosses, the upcoming comedy from director Seth Gordon (King of Kong, Four Christmases). The film stars Seth Gordon, Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell, Jason Bateman, Jason Sudekis, Charlie Day, in a film described thus:

For Nick (Bateman), Kurt (Sudeikis) and Dale (Day), the only thing that would make the daily grind more tolerable would be to grind their intolerable bosses (Spacey, Farrell, Aniston) into dust. Quitting is not an option, so, with the benefit of a few-too-many drinks and some dubious advice from a hustling ex-con (Foxx), the three friends devise a convoluted and seemingly foolproof plan to rid themselves of their respective employers…permanently. There’s only one problem: even the best laid plans are only as foolproof as the brains behind them.

First Look At The Comedy Team From Horrible Bosses

Warner Bros. has released several images and synopses for its 2011 comedy line-up including Crazy, Something Borrowed, and Hall Pass, but the most exciting release is this first image from Horrible Bosses which shows off maybe the funniest comedy trio since the Three Amigos. Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day spread hilarity on SNL and It.s Always Sunny respectively, and Jason Bateman... well, he.s Jason Bateman, goddamn it. He was on Arrested Development for Christ.s sake. The man knows comedy. This team has joined forces for Seth Gordon who has given us quite a spread of content. His comedy background has him directing at least one episode of each of the NBC Thursday shows (save 30 Rock), Community, The Office, and Parks and Recreation, as well as an episode of Modern Family. The film.s support is also very impressive. Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell, Jamie Foxx, Kevin Spacey, Donald Sutherland, »
