Folklorist is drawn into the adventure of his life

I came at this movie completely fresh, without any idea of what it was about.

I could see that it was done lovingly on a low budget with unknown actors, but the photography and music score were quite good.

It's a sci-fi tale of creatures from another planet who are using human beings and intend to take over. The folklorist hero of the story is skeptical about their existence but cannot deny the evidence he sees, and he eventually tries to stop them. The general plot line reminds me of Invasion of the Body Snatchers and I Married a Monster from Outer Space, but it's done in a more lonely way with just one man being the focal point and doing voice-over narration at times.

Several times, he seemed like an Indiana Jones kind of character.

The script was far too talky for quite awhile. The story could have moved much more quickly. The actors lacked a movie presence or charisma. It was hard to identify with the lead actor, as nothing was done to develop sympathy for him and he looked very oddball. He was a nay-sayer over and over again. Some parts of the plot were grossly unbelievable, including his attempted sabotage effort at the portal and the airplane. It was unclear why one girl who helped him did that or could do that in view of the alien powers. Although the story progressed on the back of its surprises and its introduction of unknown elements one after the other, nonetheless, it was not well-written or well done. It was not tight enough or interconnected enough. I wasn't even sure at the end how the connection was being made between a previous character and the folklorist. The folklorist seemed to figure an awful lot out very quickly at one point.

The aliens were well done and so was the production and set design. It wasn't particularly scary or horrifying. It would be hard to say that the movie had much of a theme, or even much soul. Its main focus seems to be to visualize some creatures and ideas of the imagination, sort of like a painting by Hieronymus Bosch.
