Thirty-nine recipients of the 72nd Annual Peabody Awards will be honored May 20 at the Waldorf-Astoria in Gotham. The Smithsonian Channel’s “Mlk: The Assassination Tapes” couldn’t have been made if professors at Memphis State U., back in 1968, didn’t have the foresight to preserve the historic TV, radio and police-report tapes regarding the Martin Luther King assassination. Typically, those tapes were reused and hence lost.
“It was extraordinary to find this treasure trove,” says David Royle, exec VP of programming and production at the Smithsonian Channel. Equally extraordinary, filmmaker Tom Jennings “crafts a film from these tapes that is entirely dramatic and immediate, taking the reality that existed at the time and infusing it with drama and intensity. »

The new fall season is closer than you think, and NBC has released their full schedule. Apart from reality favorites The Biggest Loser and The Voice, they are mixing things up quite a bit.
Take a look at a complete preview of the shows coming your way, and mark your calendars. It looks good for NBC this year, and while I’m not sure all of these look like winners, I think you’ll find at least a couple that you’re really going to like.

“I’ve been on Conan O’Brien like 47 times, and you don’t know who I am, right?” asks Marc Maron in the premiere episode of Maron, a new IFC comedy that’s based on his real life as a comedian and podcast host. He’s talking to his veterinarian, which is kind of funny: What kind of self-important blowhard cares if his veterinarian knows who he is? But really, he’s talking to you and me and anyone else who might’ve caught his show while flipping through the channels. Because nothing is more important to Maron than making »

Todd Barry has a lovely speaking voice. I mean yeah, he’s amazingly funny and puts out great comedy albums and seems to pop up on all the best TV shows (“Louie,” “Bob’s Burgers,” “Delocated” to name a few), but the thing to remember about Todd is that has a really terrific and lovely speaking voice. Or remember that other crap instead, I’m not here to control your goddamn hippocampus. What I am here to do is concoct immeasurably stupid questions and thrust them upon funny people like Todd. Here’s what Mr. Barry had to say: Okay, Todd, give it to »

"Wilfred," FX's quirky comedy about a depressive young man named Ryan (Elijah Wood) and the titular canine that he and only he sees as a grumpy Australian guy (Jason Gann) in a dog suit, will return for a third season on Thursday, June 20th. The show will kick off with back-to-back episodes but without "Louie," with which it was paired last year, as Louis C.K.'s series is taking the year off. The change doesn't seem likely to affect "Wilfred" much -- though "Louie" gets more critical attention, "Wilfred" actually slightly outpaced it in ratings last year. Read More: Does 'Wilfred' Have the Best Guest Star Roles on Television? "Wilfred" is an adaptation of an Australian series that was created by Gann alongside Tony Rogers and Adam Zwar, and also features Fiona Gubelmann as Jenna, Ryan's neighbor and Wilfred's owner, and Dorian Brown as Kristen, Ryan's uptight sister. »

Top 10 Glen Chapman 7 May 2013 - 07:30
Glen counts down ten terrific episodes of Marc Maron's Wtf comedy podcast. See if your favourites made the cut...
There have been close to four hundred episodes of Us comedy podcast Wtf since it started in September 2009 and its list of guests read as a who's who of comedy and the entertainment industry. During that time, the profile of host Marc Maron has increased enormously, and in the week that his self-titled TV series debuts on IFC (read our episode one review, here) how better to salute the man himself than with a run-down of Wtf's ten best episodes...
Robin Williams – 67
Starting off the list with a giant of comedy is no bad thing, particularly one who has such a long and interesting story as this one. Williams' manic energy and charisma made him a star but his battles with addiction over the »

"You're just not for everybody," comedic curmudgeon Marc Maron is told — by the more popular TV clown (at least among a comic-store backroom of Twitter nerds) Dave Foley, who plays a rather unflattering version of his real self, as does Maron, in IFC's new dark-side-of-laughter comedy series Maron (Friday, 10/9c). Sunnier than FX's Louie if only by virtue of being filmed in California, the sardonically squirm-inducing Maron alternates between slice-of-rant sitcom and self-obsessed podcast from the comedian's garage, where he vents on his unhappy personal life, his diarrhea-prone cats and his unruly, taunting Twitter following: "Who are these people? Don't they have lives?" You might well ask the same about Maron, although if he was happy (shades of Louie) there'd be no show.

Sarah Silverman hasn't had a regular perch on the air since "The Sarah Silverman Program" ended in 2010, but she's turned up on "The League" and "Louie" as well as voicing characters on "The Simpsons" and "Bob's Burgers," and she's one of the collective of comedians making freeform videos on the new YouTube channel Jash. And today, HBO announced that the edgy comedienne will be headlining her first comedy special for the premium network, "Sarah Silverman: We Are Miracles." The special will be taped in Los Angeles in May, is presented in association with Funny or Die and will debut on HBO this fall. "We Are Miracles" is being directed and edited by Liam Lynch, who's also a consulting producer -- Lynch directed Silverman's 2005 concert film "Sarah Silverman: Jesus Is Magic." The actor and Sealand football star on his telly-watching habits
Unmissable show?
I've been watching a lot of Louie. I'm a big Louis Ck fan. A lot of people are jumping on the Louis Ck bandwagon but I'm quite proud to say I have been a fan for about three or four years. He strikes me as the kind of guy you could have a pint with and he'd make you laugh.
Box set?
I'm really late to the party with this, but I am absolutely loving The Shield. It was one of those where I was like, "I'll just watch the first episode, see if it's any good. That was about 10pm, and I was still awake at 5am, going, "Oh, I might just have another one." Vic Mackey's a character who in a great many ways is a bad guy. Very questionable morals. And yet you love him »

Some of this year’s Sundance comedy-dramas have had their narratives plucked from the wellspring of their director’s personal experience, though that should never excuse any shortcomings. Yesterday, I wrote a negative review of Francesca Gregorini’s treatment of motherhood in Emanuel and the Truth about Fishes. My primary beef was less with the inherent trauma at the centre of the story, and more to do with the formal missteps that, regrettably, had a few critics in my screening snickering quietly to themselves. Their mockery was, again, not directed at the content but its aesthetic delivery, deemed preposterous once the third act indulged in a questionable surrealistic abandon.
Stand-up comedians can rarely be accused of surrendering to melodramatic impulses of the like seen in Gregorini’s feature. Us comic Mike Birbiglia’s Sleepwalk with Me leaps into fantastical dream sequences that illustrate his subconscious fears of marriage and fatherhood, »

If you, like me, are most familiar with Amy Schumer from her ego-assassinating appearances at Comedy Central's various Roasts, then her new series, Inside Amy Schumer, will have you in stitches. But with the half-hour hybrid (part stand-up, part sketch comedy, part improv), Schumer does more than titillate, she also engages the audiences in deeply fascinating dialogues about sex, gender and our collective attitudes towards both.
ETonline recently caught up with Schumer to talk about headlining her own series, her approach to the material and what she learned about TV from working with Lena Dunham and Louis C.K.
ETonline: I heard Inside Amy Schumer was originally was set to be a talk show. True?
Amy Schumer: True. I knew I was going to have a pilot with Comedy Central and thought about what they'd want right now. I knew they wanted a talk show, so I was going to do that, but if it didn't »

Gold Derby founder Tom O'Neil thinks that the FX laffer "Louie" is a strong contender to win Best Comedy Series at the Emmys. His rationale: With "Modern Family" having won three in a row, voter fatigue could mean that Emmy darling Louis C.K., who has the cool factor, is a hot prospect. Read his full analysis here. What do you think? Tell us in the comments section below or join the steamy discussion on this topic in our message boards. And make your Emmy predictions here. Our forum posters offer their differing opinions on this provocative prediction below. Renaton kicks off the debate: I think DGA, WGA and SAG nominations that the show did not have last year when it got into all those categories is a positive sign. It means the industry is paying closer attention to this show and C.K. than ever before. And they do seem to like him a lot. »

Blood On Satan's Claw
Aldous Huxley and Arthur Miller both realised that a witch hunt is a cracking way to explore metaphor, and while it's not to suggest that this modest 1971 horror is as classy and resonant as The Devils or The Crucible, at times it gets pretty close. Plus it also has an actual supernatural element, so everyone wins. In terms of mood, it's closer to that other grimly impressive curio (with a similarly marketable title) Witchfinder General than the usual, run-of-the-mill Brit-horror of the time.
Taking place in rural 17th century England, the story centres on a small village where a strange deformed skull is dug up in a field, casting a strange spell over the local children, some growing mysterious patches of fur on their bodies. A judge »

FX is know for its edgy comedies, from the entertainingly sociopathic "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" to the improvised and frequently filthy "The League" and Louis C.K.'s "Louie," the deal for which has become a benchmark in terms of offers of creative control in television. But they can't all be alt. FX, who'll be launching a comedy spin-off channel Fxx in September, is also the home to Charlie Sheen's "Anger Management," a generally standard sitcom notable mainly for the fantastically practical and business-minded deal under which it's made. If the first 10-episode season hits a particular ratings benchmark, which, in the case of Sheen's show, it did, then a 90-episode follow-up order is automatically triggered. The network announced today that it has closed another 10/90 deal with Lionsgate Television, the company that produces "Anger Management," this one for a half-hour series starring George Lopez. "Saint George" was created by Lopez, »
