Delko is comatose in hospital, badly shot in the Everglades. Horatio remembered how they met in 1997, working with his trusted assistant Jesse Cardoza's last day in his police unit on the murder of Steve Bowers's wife. Eric was a tow-truck driver, but showed keen interest and a sharp mind. So did newbie Calleigh. Still uniformed Tripp also earned trust. Written by KGF Vissers

Lieutenant Horatio Caine: We believe that a DNA test will confirm the blood found on Hollings will match the victim.
Evan Talbot: You have a pinhead-sized sample of blood. You can't run that for DNA.
Jesse Cardoza: For one test, we can.
Evan Talbot: Yeah, the defense has the right to run their own DNA test. And if you use the sample up, there's none left for them.
Jesse Cardoza: You're saying if we test it, we can't use it against the guy, and if we don't test it, we can't get the guy.
Evan Talbot: Yeah, that's the law. Excuse me, I have to be in court.
Jesse Cardoza: Well, the law just screwed us.

A Look Back In Time
18 February 2011 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Well, most of this show turned out to be an interesting flashback to 1997, just before a new CSI Crime Lab was instituted and Horatio being named to head it.

I was wondering how they would make the central characters look younger and the makeup people did a good job, smoothing over wrinkles on David Caruso, Emily Proctor, Rex Linn and others. It was good to see "Alex" (Khandi Alexander) once again and too bad they didn't show Rory Cohrane ("Tim Speedle"), although they did mention him as someone "H" should look into with his new unit.

The program is mainly about a case back then and how Eric Delko and Calleigh Duquesne wound up teaming with Horatio on a case, impressing him a lot to the point where Caine asks Eric to consider police-work as a new vocation and is taken with Calleigh's expertise. It's all interesting background stuff, to see how the current team was formed.

The present-day story is only seen in the beginning and at the end and deals with Delko, whether he will live or die after being discovered by the team near-death in a swamp. There no suspense, because know he's going to live. Apparently (I missed last season), Eric was driving a truck straight at Calleigh and the latter shot him to avoid being killed.
