Shut Up And Play The Hits | Blu-ray Review

At the pinnacle of the band’s critical and financial success, the decision to lay LCD Soundsystem to rest was and remains a conundrum. James Murphy, the creative mind behind the band, started making music under the LCD guise in his 30s with no expectations other than to have some fun, but when his dance-centric tunes started to catch the public ear, he decided to form a band that could perform his songs live. Years later, putting a massive bookend on the project, Murphy and the crew booked Madison Square Garden for their final show. With the Sundance preemed Shut Up And Play The Hits, directors Will Lovelace and Dylan Southern documented not only LCD Soundsystem’s final live performance, but managed to construct a highly conflicted portrait of Murphy over the 48 hours prior to the event. The question isn’t whether or not his final show will be a success, »

Green Day Plan Pair of Documentaries For Sundance 2013 Premiere

11 July 2012 6:30 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Just when you thought Green Day had faded into obilivion, they enter back into the spotlight – and usually in a major way. It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly a decade since their American Idiot album, which led to mash-ups, Broadway shows and even an upcoming Tom Hanks-produced feature film. They’re now ready to release not one, not two, but three albons (¡Uno!, ¡Dos! and ¡Tre!), beginning this September and now they’ve got two documentaries in the pipeline.

Speaking with Billboard, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong revealed that Tim Lynch (who collaborated with the band on their concert DVD Green Day: Bullet in a Bible) and Tim Wheeler (editor of the fantastic tour documentary The White Stripes Under Great White Northern Lights) are working together on the two films, one of which will give a behind-the-scenes looking at the making of their trio of albums. The other will go way back, »

Green Day Has Two Documentaries On The Way, Aiming For Sundance Film Festival Premiere

10 July 2012 2:42 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

They’re a punk rock band from the late 80s named after their great love of sweet Mary Jane, but during their 25-year history Green Day developed much loftier ambitions for their music. After releasing American Idiot back in 2004 (which spawned a Broadway musical and now has a film adaptation in the works) and 21st Century Breakdown in 2009, the band is now planning to release three new albums between September 2012 and January 2013. The film-related news accompanying those three albums -- titled ¡Uno!, ¡Dos! and ¡Tre! -- is that two documentaries will be made to go alongside their release. Filmmakers Tim Lynch (the producer of the band’s Live DVD “Green Day: Bullet in a Bible”) and Tim Wheeler (who worked on “The White Stripes Under Great White Northern Lights”) are creating one documentary on the making of the trio of albums, and a second which will be made up from »

Trailer For ‘Big Easy Express’ Follows Mumford & Sons, Edward Sharpe & More On Cross-Country Musical Journey

12 June 2012 11:26 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Before they officially broke up, director Emmett Malloy beautifully captured some of the last few concerts The White Stripes had with the documentary Under Great White Northern Lights. Now he is back and expanding his scope with a cross-country tour of three different bands, Mumford & Sons, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros and Old Crow Medicine Show.

Taking place on a single train across six different concerts, we’ve got the first trailer for Big Easy Express today and it looks to follow-up the excellent cinematography and intimate behind-the-scenes moments captured in Malloy’s last feature. Although I’m not a fanatic for any of these groups, this could certainly sway me. Check out the poster and trailer below via Apple.

3 bands, 6 cities, 1 train, and thousands of miles of track… the Big Easy Express documents a cinematic musical journey. Directed by renowned filmmaker Emmett Malloy (Out Cold; The White Stripes Under Great White Northern Lights »
