Not quite as good as the feature
29 March 2011 | by (Rosebush) – See all my reviews

While 1968 TUNNEL RATS deserves a rating of "7" (out of 10), for its gritty portrayal of a losing effort acknowledged by near everyone (except John Wayne), this "making of" falls a little short of the main event's production values. Though the other cast members shown improvising their parts are identified by name on screen, for instance, when actor Scott Ly is talking about the back story he has conceived for his character Huy Tran, Ly is NOT similarly acknowledged. It is as if the editorial staff could not keep themselves alert enough to view this 10:16 short in its entirety.

Still, it is nice to hear Brad Schmidt (Sgt. Mike Heaney) admit his biggest apprehension about this project is misrepresenting the actual experience of America's Vietnam veterans. As Jane Le (Vo Mai) sums up about the feature in general, "it has nothing to do with war in the end--it's just humans trying to survive in this chaotic world." Americans such as Steven Spielberg have made Holocaust movies ad infinitum--perhaps more than Germans have themselves. Now that the shoe is on the other foot, American IMDb voters obviously feel hurt a "kraut" is "messing with 'Nam", lopping three or four points off their rating for 1968 TUNNEL RATS out of pure spite (that is, if Sylvester Stallone had made this film, they'd be drooling all over themselves to rate it a "10").
