Film Review: ‘Survivor’

18 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Milla Jovovich plays a falsely accused Foreign Service Officer who works to thwart a terrorist plot as she runs from the authorities in “Survivor,” a sturdy wrong-woman thriller that feels grotesque in its citations of 9/11 and other intimations of real-world import, but also steals a few good moves from “North by Northwest” and “The Fugitive” for a solid middle section. A generic title and low buzz factor are hurdles for this day-and-date release, a meat-and-potatoes offering from helmer James McTeigue (“V for Vendetta,” “The Raven”).

The prologue, in which two Americans in Afghanistan are captured after a helicopter crash, gets the proceedings off to an unpromising start; the poorly staged action and a lack of background density give off the vibe of a videogame cut scene. One of the men is identified as a potential bargaining chip, and his fellow soldier is quickly immolated.

Review: 'Survivor' Starring Milla Jovovich & Pierce Brosnan

26 May 2015 1:44 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

There was a time when James McTeigue’s ascendance as a top tier blockbuster director seemed assured. After working with the Wachowskis on “The Matrix” trilogy as first assistant director, he made his debut feature with the smash hit “V For Vendetta,” which the siblings endorsed with a producing credit. But from there things took a decidedly downward turn. The next team up between the Wachowskis and McTeigue, “Ninja Assassin,” was a flop, and so too was his outing behind period pulp piece “The Raven.” And things continue in a downward trajectory with “Survivor,” a thriller that lines up decent actors for a credulity straining affair that aims to honor American law enforcement for stopping terrorist attacks post-9/11, but winds up trivializing their job in the process. Milla Jovovich leads the movie as Kate Abbott, a hot shot security expert brought in to help the American embassy in London look »

Milla Jovovich Runs from Pierce Brosnan in 'Survivor' Thriller Trailer

2 April 2015 11:00 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

"If you get her in your sight, do no hesitate." Pierce Brosnan took the hero role in last year's action thriller The November Man, but this year he's in villain mode for a new action thriller called Survivor. This time it's Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil) on the run as she's being framed for a terrorist bombing that Brosnan's infamous assassin character executed. It seems like a pretty generic plot, but Brosnan is doing some pretty slick stuff in this trailer. In fact, he seems to get more screentime than Jovovich, which doesn't really seem fair to the actress, but Brosnan is a James Bond veteran, so he'll help sell the movie too. Watch? Here's the first trailer for James McTeigue's Survivor, originally from Yahoo: Survivor is directed by James McTeigue (V for Vendetta, Ninja Assassin, The Invasion, The Raven) and written by Philip Shelby (Mechanic: Resurrection). After being mysteriously framed for a terrorist bombing, »

Idris Elba Decides Poe Must Die

12 January 2015 4:02 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Horror writer Edgar Allen Poe hasn't fared too well on screen in recent years. The John Cusack-starring The Raven failed to set many [telltale] hearts fluttering, while Sylvester Stallone's Poe biopic never even got off the ground. Kudos to Idris Elba then, who's ignoring those troubled projects and striding forth with one of his own. Through his Green Door production company he's developing Marc Olden's off-the-wall historical adventure Poe Must Die as a potential movie trilogy.FIrst published in 1978, Olden's weighty tome finds a depressed and frail Poe at the bottom of a bottle in 1840s New York. Recently arrived is English martial artist Pierce James Figg, who's been sent to find Poe by none other than Charles Dickens. Poe and Figg then join forces on the trail of the sorceror who murdered Figg's wife and is himself searching for the Throne of Solomon, which he believes will »

'Carol Marcus' Covers "Maxim"

5 January 2015 5:48 AM, PST | SneakPeek | See recent SneakPeek news »

Sneak Peek revealing images and footage of Brit actress Alice Eve, aka 'Carol Marcus' from "Star Trek Into Darkness", in a classic photo shoot for "Maxim" magazine:

"There is an acting gene that has been passed down to me by my parents," said Eve. "It's nature, not nurture..."

Eve is best known for her roles in the films "Starter for 10" (2006), "Crossing Over" (2009), "She's Out of My League" (2010), "Sex and the City 2" (2010), "The Raven" (2012), "Men in Black 3" (2012) and "Star Trek Into Darkness" (2013).

Eve is also known for a notorious but innocent scene in "Star Trek Into Darkness", when her character, science officer 'Carol Marcus' strips down to her underwear (as an homage to Sigourney Weaver as 'Ripley' in "Alien")...
