Rest in peace, Paul Naschy
28 December 2009 | by (The Last New Jersey Drive-In on the Left) – See all my reviews

Paul Naschy was the true king of Spanish horror cinema who reigned supreme throughout the 70's. Alas, Naschy died of cancer at age 75 on November 30, 2009. This interview for the special edition DVD of "The Hanging Woman" is probably the very last one he did prior to his untimely death. The articulate and intelligent Naschy didn't like his character in the original draft of the script, so he asked to have it rewritten and came up with the idea of making Igor the gravedigger a necrophile. Moreover, Naschy points outs the slight similarities between Igor and Gotho in "The Hunchback of the Rue Morgue." Naschy also notes that the cold weather made the shooting of the picture very tough, cites some cast members as better in their roles than others, reveals that the decapitated head was the same one used in "Horror Rises from the Tomb" and that there's a part of himself in every character that he played, and discusses the importance of preserving old movies on DVD. In addition, Naschy explains that he was forced to essay a secondary role in the movie because he was acting in another picture at the same time. Well worth seeing for Paul Naschy fans.
