New York City, in the heart of summer: a heat wave transforms the city into a tropical zone. Ten characters are drawn, one after the other, into a ring of love and desire, each one caught beyond his or her control in a chain reaction of seduction, impulses and self-discovery. Written by Alexis Lloyd
This film sounds good on paper and even has a decent cast but it never engages you to any level of satisfaction. As a matter of fact it's the feeling of complete dissatisfaction that is all that's left by the end of this movie, and was admittedly a struggle to finish. It feels like a film that has something missing, as if it's incomplete? Jennifer Tilly (Liar Liar) and Justin Kirk (Weeds) give decent performances, as does the sexy Paz de la Huerta (I love her in Boardwalk Empire) and Lee Pace (Lincoln).
Writer/director Alexis Lloyd is obviously passionate about this project and it shows throughout the movie however the actors seem to be uninspired in their performances, but that is all on first time feature director Lloyd who's inexperience shows rather glaringly. There is nothing wrong with getting a budget and script together and trying your best, as loads have done in the past but it's a damn shame when obvious talent goes to waste such as witnessed here.
I know Alexis Lloyd is trying to tell us something but for the life of me I don't know what it is. Have lots of sex? For a first feature and one million brick it's far from the worst I've seen, but if you need meaning to your story, then I strongly suggest you look elsewhere because not only does this movie lack cohesion, it doesn't really make much sense. In all honesty I don't see anyone (outside the Lloyd family) liking it, and I most certainly didn't, however I believe everyone should be given a try, so if you do get a chance to watch 30 Beats, then by all means have a gander. Miss de la Huerta is worth seeing if for no other reason than to admire her feminine curves, but unfortunately that pleasure lasts only a short time.
Not Recommended. One for the Art-house crowd or Paz fans.
