Werewolves working for vampires!
Tweekums21 September 2011
Warning: Spoilers
As season three continues we learn more about Bill's abductors; they may have been werewolves but they are working for a vampire; the King of Mississippi. He offers Bill a job as one of his sheriffs... of course he wants something in return and won't take no for an answer. Back in Bon Temps Jessica is worrying about how to get rid of the body of the man she killed and Sookie is asking Eric about the werewolves.

This was an interesting episode; last week I was sure that the werewolves were going to be this season's villains but already it looks as if this isn't the case as they are just the lackeys of another vampire. It will be interesting to see whether the King of Mississippi turns out to be good or bad. Jessica's scenes provided the laughs this week; I laughed out loud when she was discussing the purchase of a chainsaw on the phone! Deborah Ann Woll does a good job in the role. It will be interesting to see if anything happens between Sookie and Eric; it is clear that he is hoping that something will. This being True Blood there were a few other story lines including Lafayette trying to help Tara after her suicide attempt, Sam meeting his natural family and Jason Stackhouse helping arrest a drug dealer which produced a good laugh.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

Warning: Spoilers
Bill apparently was a much better match for the werewolves than they were for him. Then...riding in on his white horse and red riding outfit...is His Majesty...The Vampire King of Mississippi. HUH?!! That opening scene with "His Majesty" arriving on such a clichéd white horse...was just flat out -- well, clichéd.

Oh...and we're also introduced to Cooter. Cooter? (If this were an NFL broadcast...it would definitely earn a big Shannon Sharpe "C'MON, MAN!!!!!!!")

And contrary to the reviewer who said that this episode marked a turn away from the soap opera direction TB had taken in season 2, I think the scene with Sookie and Eric where she's all weepy about her Beeeel...is the epitome of a soap opera; and a bad one at that. Any time I feel like laughing when some actor is crying -- when it's not supposed to be funny -- I know that is one p i s s poor actor, or script, or both.

Adding to the soap opera atmosphere...Lafayette saves Tara from killing herself (and to think...I really used to LIKE Lafayette). And Hoyt and Jessica toss another log to the soap opera fire. This show is just disintegrating right before our very eyes.

Lafayette takes Tara to meet his mother, Ruby Jean, who's in a mental institution, where an aide, Jesus, is trying, unsuccessfully to feed her. (His plan was to scare her straight.) Sam goes out for a run with his shape shifter brother, Tommy (who shifted into a really nice pit bull, BTW).

His Majesty tells Bill that he wants to marry Sophie-Anne, and he wants Bill to give him the inside scoop on her. He then makes some disparaging remarks about Sookie, and Bill responds angrily. (If Beeeel isn't the most Sookie-whipped vampire to ever roam the earth, I don't know who is.) Talbot appears at Merlotte's and talks to Tara for a bit, then drains a True Blood.

Jessica rents a chain saw to do Tool Time number on the trucker she killed, but when she opens the door to where she sleeps, he's gone.

Jason helps Andy catch a crystal meth dealer who's running away from a bust. (And speaking of crystal...this scene is also the first time viewers get a glimpse of Crystal Norris.) Lorena shows up at the dinner with Bill and His Majesty...and while Bill no longer carries the torch for her, she is clearly on fire for (or because of) him.

Franklin comes to the aid of Tara who's gotten into a hassle with 2 drunk rednecks outside of Merlotte's.

Eric goes to Sookie's to protect her from a werewolf. Sookie shoots at a werewolf inside her house just as Eric and the werewolf lunge at each other.

Exactly how it should be
pontram12 July 2010
Warning: Spoilers
When I reviewed Ep.1 I hoped that some promising developments should show up soon, and so they did in this IMO extraordinary 2nd episode.

First, a new character shows up, the Vampire King of Mississippi, and he behaves much more like a King, or as a British Lord, than Louisiana's Queen. I felt that the producers and writers had much fun with him, and so I had, because he is not overdone, thanks to the good acting.

Second, the announced Werewolves are introduced. They are surprisingly no match for a recently fed Vampire, as Bill shows us in the beginning, and they are serving the Mississippi King as he wishes.

Third, Bill is introduced to the King's manor, and as the king behaves like an aristocrat, and "lives" in great luxury, there are many opportunities for black humor, near to a black comedy, and also a little bit (likeable) soapy. I had a small impression of my youth's Denver Clan ....style.

A little setback is Sam finding his new and deranged family with a young brother, also a shape-shifter. This part of of the story seems to be reserved for a continuous amount of family problems, maybe kinda needless, but watchable. The setback in my eyes is that there is a great opportunity given away (to create a mystery and follow it adventurous to its source) - as we all know where Vampires and Werelves come from, but not shape-shifters. A deranged family we already had with Tara's, and in this episode we learn that Lafayette also has, and that there is maybe a mysterious reason why both their lives went wrong. But Sam's story will probably lead to common conflicts, in which I'm not very interested here with True Blood.

Some parts of Erik's past during WW2 are shown in flashbacks, together with Godric, they were searching for a secret society of Vampires and Werewolves during a long time. There are two big and intense scenes with Eric and Sookie, and they have both some very good lines and, which is very important, a tangible chemistry (take care, Stephen!). Especially Skarsgard shows his good handling of quit scenes.

Concluding, the episode is one of the best when not the best. True blood always scraped on the brink of a (sexual and violent) soap opera with all those intrigues and small dangers, but I think it now can play with the genre as things are evolving faster and deeper and characters are intensified. Its a small improvement, but noticeable.

I also noticed a reduction of explicit sex scenes, what may please some people in the US; in return the amount of black humor and dry lines increased, which pleased anon me.

I gave 9 stars, which is slightly overrated, but we have no 8.5, so I rounded up.

S3.E2 - Very Good [8.6/10]

Warning: Spoilers
(S3. E2) My Live Reaction / Review for True Blood Season 3 Episode 2 ''Beautifully Broken'''. Episode 1 was good and I gave it a rating of 8.5/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. Nice to see that the show has werewolves now. Sam found his family and his family looks kind of messed up. Lafayette's mom seems to be a little bit crazy, I feel bad for her and Lafayette. The guy Jessica killed accidentally is a father, that sucks. It's nice to see Sam and his brother having some fun. Jessica's dead body is gone? What the hell? I wonder why werewolves are after Sookie. Overall this was a good episode, my rating is... 8.6/10.
